Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Pours a pretty good amount of brownish head and has a dark brown colour, fairly dull clarity. Aromas are sharp earthy hops balanced with roasted and toasty malts. Has spicy hop flavours with sweet toffee and chocolate maltiness. Some dry fruits (raisins), nuts and hints of caramel. Medium bodied mouthfeel, average carbonation and has a slight warming sensation. Slight bitterness in the finish, which is actually pretty nice. A well balanced black IPA, between hops and malts, and didn’t find one overpowering the other. Dieu du Ciel seems to never disappoint. Well, rarely.

Buteljerad januari 2013. Underbar, komplex arom.

bottle @ Keg Liquors / Clarksville IN --- Aroma of toasted malt. Opaque black color, cool tan colored head that quickly shrinks to a thin cover, sheets of lace. Taste is toasted malt that coasts through a lightly fizzed swallow to chocolate bittering. The sweet tries to hold on, but the hops win easily at the end. A full-bodied, complex brew, leaning toward general bittering, but quite easy to drink.

Bottle had on 3.30.14. See-through dark pour. Smell and aroma are similar - not much to it. Some black tea in flavor. A little earthy. Not much going on here.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. Caramel, coffee, pine, citrus, chocolate. This beer is lacking the hops that I would expect from an IPA. Maybe I got an old bottle. More porter like.

Bottle at La Palette in Toronto. Bottled 05/13 - really?!?! Black with a smallish creamy white head. The nose is very roasty with a delicate resiny hoppy note. Tastes really-really roasty, it’s more like a porter or a stout, the, sweetness, and the black bread crust and faint sourness cover any hints of hoppiness. The palate is dryish, carbonation medium active, and the body medium. So where’s the IPA?
