Routes des épices (French for "Spice Route") is a rye beer brewed with both black and green peppercorns. Initially, the beer reveals flavours of fresh grain and malt, which give it notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit. The pepper flavour and aroma is fully revealed in the finish, which leaves a pleasant, spicy, tingling sensation on the tongue.

Wow! Subtle and tasty. Peppercorn is subtle, felt in the tongue tingly finish, and only occasionally wafting into the smell. Smells more chocolate or caramel. Unique, spicy. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark amber/cider color; Medium body; Aroma of malt, caramel, some fruit, & spice; Flavor of slight sweet malt, caramel, fruit, peppercorns, and spice; Fairly well balanced; Pretty aggressive pepper flavor - but I enjoyed it.

11.5 oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter. Pour is hazy dark brown with an off-white head that is not durable and leaves just small spots of lacing. Aroma: dark bread, peppercorns and surprisingly strong toffee/brown sugar notes. Flavor: mildly bitter overall. Lightly spicy grains and sweet upfront. Peppercorns and spicy rye kick in lightly in the fine finish and aftertaste. Overall: well crafted ale featuring sweet malts, rye and pepper.

Vive Dieu Du Ciel!

Veiled dark brown color with an amber hue and a moderate amount of activity. Creamy beige 2-3 finger head, lasting around 10 to 15 minutes, with some very good legs. Aromas of molasses, bread, and caramel. Earthy and bready flavors of toffee, molassy, roasted grains, dark fruits, strong herbal feel. Pleasant sugary feel with low sharpness but a little bitter. Slick full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Light finish of medium length, ending with a thick molassy tongue coat and a lingering peppercorn feel. Overall very good quality craft having very nice flavors and good freshness. Nicely balanced and well rounded. Perfect black pepper finish that is well intensified and pleasant.

Clear deep Amber hue under a rocky light beige head. Semisweet bready aroma that’s got a touch of rye and light black pepper. Big rye and black pepper pop on the beginning of the flavor, then melds quickly into a semisweet bready flavor that’s more bock-like than anything else. Mellow overall, only a little nuance at the start then gets one dimensional.

341ml bottle. Pours a very little thin layer of head and quickly goes away. Has a reddish burnt copper colour. Has light malty aromas as well as a bit of spices. Flavour is of dark roasted malts, very strong and bitter aftertaste. Medium carbonation. Spiced mouthfeel, not hot, just the sensation. Hint of peppercorns not overly abundant as you would be led to expect. Also in flavour are hints of malts and notes of rye. Hops are quite mild in flavour but more noticeable in aroma. Love this stuff, and quite manageable if on a binge or just for a session.

This was poured into a becher pint glass. The appearance was a hazy burnt dark orange close to bronzed amber. A little white foamy head started and dissipated at a nice pace. Thin stringy lacing spider webbed around the glass. The smell started off with strong spicy peppercorn up front and then the rye malt amplifying the spice. Delicate breadiness underneath. The taste was mainly spicy pretty much all of the way through. Spicy peppercorn to rye aftertaste. Smooth grassiness combines in the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly light allowing the spiciness to hit my tongue with some nice harshness. Overall, I say this was a pretty good rye beer. It’s pretty spicy all around, so don’t expect it to be balanced. I think I could still have it again.
