On tap at the 12th anniversary of the brewpub, dark amber-copper color, with a beige head, soft grainy toasted, caramelized, smoked malt nose with some smoky bacon, meaty ham accents, with a faint fuity note in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a toasted, caramel, biscuity, smoked malt character with some mild smoky ham, beechwood, ashen flavors, with a faint dried raisin fruity undertone, leading towards a malty, smoky, fruity, faint lingering bitterness finish.

Tap at the Blind Tiger. Creamy white head with nice lacing. Big, hammy smoke aroma, cheerios and cocoa puffs. Big, clean, smoky, unadorned flavor with a nice balance of German hopping throughout. Very authentic.

Tap at BT. One of the better beers of the night. Pours a slight chill hazed copper with a nice fluffy white sticky head. Aroma is massive with the woody meaty smoked malts and even gives a slight hint of peat- dont know if peat was added but it seemed slight- light malty biscuit and burnt malt hint yet fresh and doughy. Flavor is a bit more subdued- still lots of clean cold smoked malts, some wood, earth, meat, nutty doughy malts- and light grass- seemed pretty fresh as well- smooth easy drinking finish- the smoke is intense at first, but it does not get astringent, medicinal, or harsh, very nice!

Tap at Blind Tiger. Nose has the big smoke to it. Flavor follows the nose. Smokey indeed but well balanced. It’s got a rough edge and a dusty dry body. Smoke prevails before during and after.

[3377-20100919] Tap. Smokey bacon cigarette aroma. Hazy, dark red body with a long-lasting off-white creamy head. Flavour is more of the same, with tons of bitter cigar smoked grains and mild bandaid throughout. Medium body. Interesting, not wonderful.

In short: A simple but very effective smoked golden lager. Exemplary in its simplicity
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Clear dark golden body topped by a medium off-white head
In long: Nose is very smoky with a smoke character with is smoked wood and smoked ham. Taste is smoky, crisp cereals, beach wood, fruity caramel. Discreet leafy hops in the finish to dry out the beer without much bitterness. After-taste is mostly smoke. This beer is very clean and bright beer. Felt true to the style, reminiscent of the “true” smoked german session lagers I’ve had. Not as refreshing as the best sessionable example of the style but very good nonetheless. This is a very convincing beer. So convincing in fact that if it could talk I bet it could have convinced De Niro that nobody was not looking at him.

A golden amber lager with a thin lacing creamy off white head. A light smokey bacon aroma with fusel notes. In mouth, a light smoked lager with light bacon over caramel malt, not bad. On tap at DDC 12th Anniversary, Sept. 11 2010.
