Clear copper with a thick creamy off-white head with amazing retention and beautiful lacing. Aroma is smoke, wood and dark malt. Flavor is smoke, wood, malt, mild bitterness, creamy mouthfeel and herbal hops.

2010-09-18 on draught at Volo. Cloudy coppery gold with a large lasting frothy beige head. Perhaps the fact I drank this with a Caplansky’s smoked meat sandwich influenced me, but this seemed more like smoked MEAT than most other rauchs I’ve had - like hardwood cured bacon or whole hams; not bitter, just meat, smoke and plenty of roasty sweet caramel - quite appealing. The taste was similarly balanced - hardly any alcohol, moderately sweet roast and appealing smoke - but perhaps more restrained than the aroma; good, that’s for sure. Full-bodied, a bit chewy, with a hint of astrinency, mild carbonation, and a nice moderately long smokey finish, it left just a hint of woodsmoke tang, no sweetness in the aftertaste. Good stuff, a real drinkin’ rauch.

(Rating #3285)

On tap at DDC anniversary.
Appearance : Clear amber. Lots of lacing.
Aroma : Big notes of bacon and smoked ham. Lots of smoked ham. A bit woody with light caramel.
Taste : Smoked ham and light bacon. Light roastyness. FInish is very smokey. Light fruits.
Overall : Very nice smoke on the nose. Smoke is a complex mix of bacon and ham. Finish is very smokey. Still pretty straight forward but it does the work. Still, at the end of my glass I was saturated and would not have been able to drink another one. This one was better than their Charbonniere.

2010-09-XX. Hazy dark amber with a large foamy white head. aroma is very smokey, with subtle wood and campfire accents but smoke is too strong for me. Flavour is similarly smokey, muted bitterness and underlying malt are eclipsed by the pervasive smoke. Smooth average plus palate. Ugh. Well made but very much not to my taste. On tap

Enjoyed on tap at Bar Volo Dieu Du Ciel Night. Brewed in August. Peachy colour with some grewy highlights. Lacey, one-quarter inch of white head. Attractive smoke aroma. Fuller mouthfeel. Bang on the style, moderate sweetness behind smokey taste, refreshing. Goes great with smoked meat sandwich.

Quevillon (3110) - Boisbriand, Quebec, CANADA - SEP 13, 2010
Drank on tap (12 oz) at there 12th anniversary party, September 11, 2010. Red honey, small head. Light aroma of burned malt. Taste very smoky malt, notes of dry and sweet hops, dry sour aftertaste. A very light and interesting rauchbier!

MartinT (9932) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - SEP 6, 2010
My Bottom Line:
Unidirectional smoke graces this Rauchbier from aroma to lengthy finish, generously daubing spicy hops with salty cereal crackers.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A film of foam flirts with the light amber haze.
-This felt leaner than their Charbonnière.
-The hop finish was not very bitter, but the eternal smoke might be responsible for concealing some of the alpha apport.
-This is not really complex, but it is still a beautifully quenching Rauchbier for lovers of the style.

On tap at the Chambly festival.
