This noble winter beer is brown in colour with flaming red highlights. Its taste is delicately sweet and liquor-like with a hint of burnt caramel coming from the malt and a prolonged boiling time. It is a very bitter beer with aromas of hops and alcohol, and flavours reminiscent of red fruit brought by the English-type yeast we use to ferment it. The aftertaste is accentuated by the wonderful flavour of hops. Solstice d’Hiver is brewed only once a year, and is then aged for 4 to 5 months before being sold. This aging process is necessary to achieve an ideal equilibrium between the sharp bitterness and the other flavours in the beer. After aging, it is then sold starting mid-December of each year, until stocks last.

A winter classic here, please keep that in mind while reading this rating. Slightly acidic nose full of sugar, molasses and faint hops. It is (as per brewer’s notes) dark brown, caramel-like with no head sticking out. Taste is sweet with a balancing bitterness. It is never harsh, just really intense. Not much hop aromas but they are definitely present on the bittering side. Overall a really solid offering by DDC, let’s hope I don’t miss out on their next barrel-aged release of this one!

UPDATED: SEP 16, 2017 Bottle. Tried at the Mucky Duck. Very dark. Surprisingly refreshing for how bitter it is. Smells and tastes malty. Didn't pour with a head.

Heavily hopper and heavily bitter from the first sip. Heavily malty. Not really impressively balanced. Just a mediocre brew.

First barelywine in awhile. They are not kidding about this beer being bitter for the style. I find it actually a bit refreshing to be honest. Over 10% and tastes it too. Has a sweetness to it like tamarind also. Thick, maple syrup colored with no lace or head.

colui72 (1086) - HONG KONG - JUL 31, 2017
Clear bright copper, moderately carbonated, with a finger of cream head and nice lacing. Aroma of sweet malts and booze, lightly fruity. Tastes sweet and boozy, with lots of sweet malts, light fruitiness. Not a fancy beer, quite straight and clean. Medium body, slick feel, soft carbonation, bitter finish. Good, but below expectations.

Twistoff bottle. Artistic and lonely label. Ruby black-brown beer with a Haitian cotton colored head. Sweet, vinous, candied aroma. Sweet, mossy, tannic. A bit astringent on the backend, body is heavy. Sugary on the lips, vodka booziness in high palate and vaporous. Warming. Overall, this was a little clumsy and just not that enjoyable. Beer Stop, Tallahassee.

Klassisch rosineninfiziert und durchaus schlank holzig. Berry, malty, red & beautiful. Amber Up Your Ass? . Tap Stuff im MUTED HORN Berlin. A Solid One!!

Kastanjekleurig/robijnrood bier, off-white schuimkraag. Dadels, pruimen, donker rijp fruit, bourbon, caramel. Diepe volle smaak. Licht bittere, warmende, afdronk. Prima barley-wine.

Vom Fass im Muted Horn Berlin 2017-07 getrunken. Ein richtig leckeres Barley Wine mit einem malzigen vollen Körper. Der Hopfen ist gut eingebunden und harmoniert mit der leicht alkoholischen Süße.

dunklermessias (293) - GERMANY - JUL 5, 2017
On tap at Muted Horn Berlin. Comes with a dark reddish-brown color and a nice off-white head. Nice nose of acidic grapes, old balsamico vinegar, roasted malts, caramel. Nice sweet taste. Roasted Malts and dried fruits at finish. Well balanced bitterness. Great one!

Getestet am Canada-Day im Muted Horn. Ziemlich schwarz. Riecht und schmeckt wie flüssige Malzbonbons. Eigentlich haarscharf am Stil vorbei.
