As I pour I see that it is on the lush ruby side of brown witha cream coloured head that didn’t settle with much permanence, but it didn’t bugger off in quick time either. The aroma lingered predominantly in darker grains: chocolate malt and brown ale malts especially with a touch of dusty caramel. It is a lovely smell though. The smell isn’t of deep, rich, sweet chocolate, rather cocoa powder and maybe a mention of fruit peelings. Plenty of mouthfeel upon drinking give you a chocolate mousse or milkshake sensation and then there’s a return to the dusty cocoa. There’s some sweetness, but not unwelcome. A pinch of dark cocoa bitterness at the end. I did like this, but I felt that it could have had a little more character. So often Brown Ales suffer from a slight lack of inspiration. Let’s revive a great style shall we?

Backlog entry: A massive flight at the brewpub. All beers were a bit on the light side. True to style. The variety is impressive and they are worth the try.
