On tap at the brewpub; they are calling it "Velvet". Really great floral, tropical fruit aroma. Taste starts with some malty sweetness and transitions nicely into bitter pine and citrus. Body is a bit on the light side, carbonation is soft. Tasty beer.
On "velvet" (aka nitro) at the 7th street location, pours a dark brown with some creamy, tan head. Nose has toast, burnt malts, bread, some pine, soap, a little chocolate. Nitro. Large beige head atop brown-black body. Aroma is medium sweet, roast, some grapefruit/orange, light chocolate. Dark brown coloured body with a nice tan head, about two centimetres tall. Aroma of pungent hops with a citrus and piney bite along with some roasted malt and caramel/toffee - nice! Medium-bodied; Strong roasted malt flavours with a very nice balance of hops coupled with some sweet finishes, but a very malty flavour at the end. Aftertaste shows some great complexity with the roasted malt, a hint of light spices and a bit of sweetness balancing out the sweetness. Overall, a nice beer and a good example from the style, especially from a local brewer. I sampled this pint on draught on 30-November-2012 at the Washington location. Pours near black with a half finger head to start. There is very little retention and getting lacing requires quite a bit of agitation. Even then, it doesn’t stick around for awhile. The aroma is a bit strange with the forward notes coming from some milk chocolate, almost like a lighter stout. The hop aromas are very faint and I can’t say that I would really recognize them if it weren’t for the name of the beer. Along for the ride is the good old diacetyl character--fun, fun.
The taste doesn’t really get any bettter. Along with mild chocolate there is also some mild roast character and the faintest hints of light piney hops. A bit of butter in the finish, which is otherwise fairly mediocre. I didn’t really want to.finish this and would not have it again.
