Editor’s note: Previously brewed by Djævlebryg at Brøckhouse, Hillerød, Denmark.

English: Old Mephisto is a big beer: Full, warming and intense. Old Mephisto offers balanced sweetness, roasted caramel and a rounded bitterness - all held together by the vinous character. The inviting brandy coloured Old Mephisto can be enjoyed with strong cheeses, full game dishes or on its own.

Bottled. Hazy, dark amber beer has thick and creamy head and nice lacing. Fruity and herbal hoppy nose, some raw apple and a touch of alcohol. Winegums and dried apricots. Sweetish, dark caramelly flavor and drier pale malts. Slightly resiny bitter finish with hints of toasted almonds. Slightly vegetal and alcoholic. Smooth, slick texture with alcoholic warmt. Medium bodied. Simple BW.

Bottle. Dark brown with a thick foamy off-white head. Aroma is dark caramel with biscuits, raisins and citrusy hops. Flavor is toffee, biscuits, caramel, toasted malts, resiny hops and warm alcohol. Full body with a slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Very good barley wine.

Rating #592, bottle from Barley Wine

Easily opaque brown-red beer with a green hue. Ok head. Aroma has malts, loads of hops, caramel, alcohol, berries. Or as one of my friends called it: Beer sirup. Flavor of malts, liquorice, blackcurrant, raspberries, raisins, menthol, sweetness, alcohol and a medium bitter finish. Medium thickness, nicely soft. Good!

Pours a very cloudy copper/orange colour and a solid dirty white head that lasts and leaves good lace up the glass. Aromas of sweet malt, sweet dried fruits, perfumy, toffee and overall quite fruity. Flavour is sweet fruits, sweet malts, mild bitterness, light toffee, slightly nutty and a warming alcohol character.

The pour is a translucent, deep garnet color with an average, beige, pillowy head which is somewhat lasting and leaves a bit of soapy lace rings. The nose is warming with rich caramel and toffee, vanilla, fruit cake, brandy-like sweetness, and hints of woodsy notes. The flavor is still quite sweet but balanced nicely with some bitter notes; still rich with toasted caramel, vanilla, and cake-like notes with vinous sherry notes, some raw oak, and some leafy bitterness. The moderate bitterness comes out more from the middle on from the oak and leafy notes with a light to moderate acidity. The palate is nearly full, slightly syrupy, chewy, and soft to lively. The beer finishes fairly long with the oak and leafy bitterness nearly balancing toasted caramel and faint sherry lingering. Maybe not the most complex BW I have tried but really the style I tend to enjoy; rich malt notes, a drinkable warmth, and a balancing bitterness. The palate worked well for me and the vinous-type notes kept the intrigue. Maybe not the prototypical type of the style but something I really liked.

Bottle, labelled "best before judgement day". Sweet, alcoholic piss/puke aroma; watery flavour which is quite impressive for a 10+% beer.

Bottle. Pours a nice dark amber color with an off white head. Aroma is really nice and malty, lots caramel, toffee, sweet malts, brown sugar, some hop bitterness still left, though I think this is an older bottle, marmalade and more traditional English fruit flavors. The flavor follows the nose, I get lots of the caramel and toffee, the sweet malt, brown sugar, dark fruits, some hop bitterness, marmalade, fruit cake and the traditional English fruit flavors. The body is medium to full with a silky mouth feel. Overall a great Barley Wine, I would love to see this barrel aged!

annunz123 (957) - Taunton, Massachusetts, USA - JUN 27, 2012
Pours cloudy brown, almost like apple cider, with a modest head. Aroma has caramel, fruit/apple, and some pipe tobacco. Flavor starts sweet with fruit, dates, and molasses. A little bittering hops and alcohol provide balance in the finish, but still just a little too sweet overall.

3.5
MotherBrother (945) - Aalborg, DENMARK - APR 11, 2012
Pour dark, deep ruby red, with a small creamy off-white head. Aroma of plums, dates, malts, caramel, toffee, portwine notes ans slight oaky notes. Slightly hoppy towards the end. Taste is sweet, with a slight bitter finish, from both the hops and the wood. Medium body, with a medium oily texture, and average carb.

Bottle. Dark brown with a medium sized light brown head. Aromas of caramel, malt, alcohol, nuts and toffee. The flavour is warming and sweet with notes of caramel, syrup and mild hops. A warming sipper..
