Esquire Magazine calls our 90 Minute I.I.PA., "perhaps the best I.P.A. in America." An Imperial I.P.A. brewed to be savored from a snifter. A big beer with a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate. This beer is an excellent candidate for use with Randall The Enamel Animal! 90 ibu

This is a jewel. The body looks like liquid amber. No head on my pour. Kick back and sip away. Theres no way to gulp this down, which is fine because it gets better as it warms up. Refreshingly bitter all the way. But theres this sweet maltiness as well to keep this interesting. The combination of hops makes this very complex. Something for everyone here: citrus, pine, grass. All lingering at the end. Dry, smooth finish.

UPDATED: OCT 12, 2005 Bottle: I swear to god I have rated this beer at least 3 times already and its getting lost. Weird. Well here goes... Copper amber colored, showing chill haze, with a medium white head that slowly recedes to a ring around the glass. In more recent years this ring seems to dies rather than stick to the glass. Im not quite sure why. The taste is hops and plenty of em right from the get go. Theres citrus, grapefruit, pine and if fresh - grass/plant coming from the dry hopping. Multi-dimensional, this beer adds biscuit, grains, a hint of alcohol, and a slight sweet malt to the mix. Medium bodied, medium carbonation, crisp and bitter mouthfeel that cleanes that palate after every sip. Adding to the rating 10/11/05: On draught this is a different animal. Yeah randall is fun, but it takes away from the body and only adds a little to the aroma and flavor. Nope, this is best on draught, no randall. You really cant ask for a better appearance, beautifully retained & thick head. Fresh on tap, the aroma is so fresh, crisp, and assertive with body and taste to match. I would give this at least a 4.5 for the draught version I had at the Gaithersburg location.

Im starting to like ipas more and more, this beer helps!! Poured somewhat cloudy orange. Beutiful glimmering foam head, good lacing!!! Has a odd but pleasing taste that has a slight kick to it, must be the 9%!! a pleasing beer that gets evil when it starts warming up...crazy good bitterness!

Big hop flavors but a surprisingly large amount of maltiness to back it up. There is a chewy sweetness that keeps the hops from overwhelming. For me this could be a session beer because it is that smooth.

Appears a rich coppery orange with a 3 finger head that lasts. Plenty of thick white lacing sticks all over the goblet. Smell is of tons of orange and grapefruit citrus with sugary biscuity malts. Taste is fin awesome. I love the balance of sugary biscuit and bitterness that works well together as a dynamic duo. Very resinous, sticky and sweet with no overkill. The mouthfeel is great. Sticky with nice carbonation. Drinkablitiy is awesome. I cant think of anything to dislike about this beer.

To be honest, I dont like IPAs, but this creature wasnt too bad. Its the best IPA I have ever had, which I suppose is not THAT much of a compliment, but in my own little way it is. The hops are huge and the citrusy flavor can seem overwhelmingly strong, but it covers up the alcohol taste quite well, so I will pick my battles wisely.

Pours like liquid gold with a thin white head. The room fills with IPA citrusy / grapefruit aroma. Mouth starts watering. Citrus, grapefruit, a bit of piney hop in the flavor. Mouthfeel is good - its not watery, you can feel a bit of thickness. Flirtations of alcohol in the finish, but the taste is only barely there. It warms the belly nicely. Bitter, yet clean finish. This IPA well deserves its high ranking.

Candy like hop aroma with little to no head. Hazy red-brown appearance. Finally, NC gets an imperial IPA. This has a diffent flavor from 60 min, the hops are more chewy rounding out the bite in the finish. Damn I could drink this all day.

UPDATED: JUN 30, 2007 Got this bottle while visiting relatives in Michigan, and have been looking forward to trying it finally. Pours a golden color with a decent head that slowly fades away to a small cap with some pretty decent lacing. Smells is citrus, pine, hops and malt. Not as overwhelming as I expected. This is my first double IPA, and I was expecting a stronger assault on the nose. Taste is initially citrus and hops, but finishes with a nice malt sweetness to it. Its smoother and has a lot more balance than I was expecting. I find that I have to force myself to not drink this to quickly. I havent had very many DFH beers, but this is my favorite one thus far.
