Black. Medium brown head. Licorice aroma. Light medium body. Smotth toffee taste with a hint of coffee.
12oz bottle. I just had to rate a DFH beer after all the anger about AB this week. Pours out dark brown almost black topped with a tan head. Nose is light chocolate some roast malts and a little hop bitterness. Taste is more like sadness as you can see my shity same old reviews are still mine and not a AB robot. Sure hope this blows over at some point but I am sure the scares are deep. PanMarek (460) - Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 12, 2016

Nice woody flavor and scent. Slightly watery up front. Gets a little richer later with the oak. Nice and dark. Tap hauxe (832) - Butzbach, Hesse, GERMANY - DEC 24, 2015
Rated from old notes. A workmanlike stout, rich, hints of chocolate and licorice. Served too cold at the time so some of the flavors were probably dulled. Definite candidate to re-rate. DrNosha (2385) - Württemberg, Germany, GERMANY - OCT 12, 2015
Vom Fass im Brauhaus. Tiefes Schwarz mit cremigem Schaum. Kaffe, Bitterschokolade und leichte Kräuternoten. Antrunk überraschend herb. Für mich zuviel Kaffee.

Pours dark reddish brown with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, and coffee. Taste is medium sweet and light to medium bitter with a long chocolate, roasted, coffee and cocoa finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
On tap at the brewpub. Close to black in the glass, with a dense light tan finger thick head on top. Roasted aroma with coffee and some charcoal. Nice piney addition too. There’s a nice bitterness in the flavor, with roasted malts, some coffee and bonfire. Dry, full-bodied and smooth on the palate. Long finish with a nice blend of malts and hops. Lovely, especially considering the abv. 150621 mstrcrwly (1000) - New York, USA - MAY 21, 2015
on tap, poured into a pint glass..dark brown with a fluffy tan head..aroma of coffee,licorice,smoke,leather..coffee,licorice comes thru nicely with a smokiness that doesn’t linger too long..impressive. bnokk (535) - Lee, Massachusetts, USA - MAY 17, 2015
APPEARANCE - black beauty with light nougat colored head - not white As indicated on the bottle.
NOSE - extraordinarily complex nose. Malt sweetness with a good balance of bitterness - pribBly from the coffee.
FLAVOR - heavy bitter notes right off the top. Totally coffe as it warms up a bit. Slightly sweet malt background in the inital sips. Maxbier (999) - Maryland, USA - APR 19, 2015
12oz bottle. Dark brown pour with medium brown head (into Spiegelau stout glass). Aroma of chocolate malt, coffee and earthy aroma (I presume that is from the chicory). Some peppery (chicory) flavor but mainly a dry earthy stout. Paired very well with dinner (chicken teriyaki). I think this beer would sell better if they called it Dogfish Head Stout, I think the Chicory in the name unnecessarily scares off the casual craft beer shopper (not me- I am more of a formal craft beer customer).
