2011 marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever. Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head pays tribute to this blues legend by gettin the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale. Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse, 10.0 ABV, 10.0 SRM in color, and dry-hopped with 100% centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we at Dogfish are stoked for this mighty musical centennial? To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the centennial hops (and as a shout out to Robert Johnsons mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson) we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Bottle from Jamestown S’Klallam Longhouse Market & Deli, Sequim
Hazy copper color with small head. Very nice aroma, peppery and lemony, and nice grainy malts; very light vanilla. Lean mouthfeel, soft, with some alcohol perceived immediately; grainy malt flavor, light colored caramel and hints of toffee; quite strong bitterness, soft hop resins, a light fruity touch from the hops and some citrus fruit peel. Balanced and powerful, not too heavy to drink.
Very nice beer.

15-MAY-2014, botlle @SpringHill Suites Newark, from Harrys Teeter, NoMa, Washington. My birthday gift (or part of it) from Marianne and the kids. Very hazy orange with lasting, lacing off-white head. Wonderful hoppy aroma with grape fruit and pine, over ripe fruit, liqour-like orange notes, alcohol. Taste the same. With even more citrus. Full body, medium carbonation, sweet but never cloying. Actually a bit dry on the long very bitter finish. Fantastic. Just what i hope for in an IIPA. Thx family:-)

This pours a hazy, dark amber color with a fluffy, beige head. The aroma is mild with a slight hint of malts and lemon mixed with some bitterness. The taste is smooth and easy drinking. The overall tone is very bready with some citrus and bitterness. Very well-balanced and smooth drinking for a 10% beer. This is a well-made brew all the way around.

Pours orange body with loads of foamy head. Aroma is lemony and earthy hops. Flavor is big time lemon hops and just the right amount if bitterness, coats your tongue over time but well balanced by the malts to stay drinkable. Medium body. Slightly warming. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

swesson (453) - Highlands Ranch, Colorado, USA - MAY 3, 2014
Poured from a bomber. Pour slowly! Makes a huge, foamy, off-white head. Orange body. Great lacing all the way down the pint!Big-bad hops with a huge taste. Just the right amount of bitterness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

beerbaaron (1998) - Arizona, USA - MAY 3, 2014
Cloudy yellow amber/golden. Good head. Fruity, citrus, grapefruit. Excellent hop character. Plenty of caramel. Big beer. Lots of hops, lots of malt. Nice and fruity. Some alcohol, and then some more. Different, in a good way. Certainly unique. Not as heft in the body as the aroma and flavor would lead to believe. Strong but easy going bitterness. Smooth. Very hoppy. Spicy grassy. Cool, fun brew..

Dr_MedievAle (214) - Alabama, USA - APR 29, 2014
Orange and lemon peel on the nose. Appearance: thick and foamy off-white head that dissipates rather quickly. Cloudy brownish-orange body with good carb bubble display. Taste is a blast of sea salt, citrus rind, some tropical fruit and bitter grass. Palate: oily. Lots of hop oils here.

HippieFee (446) - - APR 28, 2014
Bottle - Hop and a slight lemon smell to it. Golden brown color. Hop and strong sweet flavor on this one. Doesn’t taste much like lemon but that is probably where the sweetness comes from.

sturmthis (1149) - Bavaria, GERMANY - APR 24, 2014
Draft. Orange color with little white head. Citrus and grapefruit aroma. Very strong fruity taste, lemon and grapefruit. Hop bomb that hides the alcohol well. Enjoyed it a lot.
