2011 marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever. Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head pays tribute to this blues legend by gettin the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale. Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse, 10.0 ABV, 10.0 SRM in color, and dry-hopped with 100% centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we at Dogfish are stoked for this mighty musical centennial? To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the centennial hops (and as a shout out to Robert Johnsons mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson) we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

brewskis (123) - Saint John, Indiana, USA - JAN 4, 2013
UPDATED: JAN 26, 2013 Pours a hazy burnt orange color with a finger and a half length head that goes away somewhat slowly. Smells of lots of citrus fruits from the centennial hops. Grapefruit, orange, maybe some pineapple, definitely get a lemon rind smell as well, some booze. A tiny hint of some sweet breadiness from the malt, but is overtaken by the intense citrus scents. Taste starts with a decent amount of bitterness, as well as some grapefruit, orange, and lemon. Get a nice creamy middle from the malt, along with some sweetness, but still getting more abrasive. Then the finish is tons of resinous hop flavors and a lot more lemon. Get a lot of grapefruit, a lot of pine, some orange. A ton of lemon rind, which is the last flavor to go on the finish. Almost get like a "cleaner" type flavor. More sweet breadiness shows through on the finish, which makes for a more balanced beer as it warms. Its a much better beer at a warmer temperature. A slight touch of booze on the finish that doesnt quite go well with the other flavors. Mouthfeel is creamy, oily, and somewhat sticky. high medium body. There are some good qualities to this beer, but overall it was a slight miss in my opinion for where my expectations were at.

Thank you BDomua! 650 ml. bottle sampled @ ZZT 2016-1. 2011 Vintage! Dark hazy orange, little white head. Nose is old lemon, zest, herbal, green grass. Taste is milky yeast, low sweetness, lemon, zest, still quite big on lemon, still rather bitter, herbal bitterness. Sugar & yeast are showing. You get some vintage notes. Still pretty decent for a 5 year old IPA. Held up better than expected, must have been stellar fresh.

750 mL bottle. Originally reviewed 5/30/2011. Big white head and a dark amber body. Head retention is good and the lacing is ample. A bit dark for an IPA, but its Dogfish, so Im not surprised. Smells of lemons and hops. Citrus character of the hops is overwhelmed by lemons. Smells malty, too. The combination reminds me of lemon Pine-Sol. Its not really appealing. The taste is better. The lemons dont get in the way of any hop flavor. They seem to complement the hops and make it feel fresher. It really does just taste like 90 with lemons, though. No getting around it. Heavy for an IPA. Too heavy, really. Fills me up way too quickly. I was glad I split the bottle with someone. The smell is off-putting, but the taste is good, and thats what I care about most. Its 90 with lemons, which is an interesting twist, but I wont be picking up any more of this.

Cloudy , amber color. Nice , off-white head. Honey , pine , lemon in aroma. Aggressive, hoppy bitterness balanced by caramel sweetness in taste. Good stuff from Dogfish, as usually.
