2011 marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever. Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head pays tribute to this blues legend by gettin the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale. Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse, 10.0 ABV, 10.0 SRM in color, and dry-hopped with 100% centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we at Dogfish are stoked for this mighty musical centennial? To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the centennial hops (and as a shout out to Robert Johnsons mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson) we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Split this bottle yesterday with friends. We poured it into small pint glasses and got a two finger white head sitting on top of a clear orange body. The head settled to a thin lace rather quickly but carbonation was good. You certainly can smell the lemon citrus in this brew. It was very one dimensional when it came to the aroma, citric hops would sum it up. The flavor reminded me of the 90 min IPA but with a fresh lemon thrown in it.(yummy) It was rather oily in the mouthfeel but I did enjoy every drop. Do it I think it was worth what I paid for the bottle.. LOL, I say stick with the 90 min IPA. This brew may be a bit to much of a Sony gimmick for me.

Bottle @ ZZT 2016-1. Aroma of bitter hop, pine and malt. Taste has caramelised malt, pine, soap and ripe fruit. Solid, but a bit too old.

Thank you BDomua! 650 ml. bottle sampled @ ZZT 2016-1. 2011 Vintage! Dark hazy orange, little white head. Nose is old lemon, zest, herbal, green grass. Taste is milky yeast, low sweetness, lemon, zest, still quite big on lemon, still rather bitter, herbal bitterness. Sugar & yeast are showing. You get some vintage notes. Still pretty decent for a 5 year old IPA. Held up better than expected, must have been stellar fresh.

Sampled from bottle @ ZZT 2016-1. Hazy orange color, medium sized off-white head that lasts for quite a long time. Lovely aroma of hops, malts, sweetish hops. Taste malts, hops, lightly resinous. Lovely stuff.

[Jan 9 2016] Big bottle from Bethesda Food and Beverage. Nice copper body with slight head. Nose is malty, peppery, lemon. Taste similar of malts, caramel, and lots of hops too. Alcohol noticeable and warming. Nice finish.

750 mL bottle. Originally reviewed 5/30/2011. Big white head and a dark amber body. Head retention is good and the lacing is ample. A bit dark for an IPA, but its Dogfish, so Im not surprised. Smells of lemons and hops. Citrus character of the hops is overwhelmed by lemons. Smells malty, too. The combination reminds me of lemon Pine-Sol. Its not really appealing. The taste is better. The lemons dont get in the way of any hop flavor. They seem to complement the hops and make it feel fresher. It really does just taste like 90 with lemons, though. No getting around it. Heavy for an IPA. Too heavy, really. Fills me up way too quickly. I was glad I split the bottle with someone. The smell is off-putting, but the taste is good, and thats what I care about most. Its 90 with lemons, which is an interesting twist, but I wont be picking up any more of this.

Cloudy , amber color. Nice , off-white head. Honey , pine , lemon in aroma. Aggressive, hoppy bitterness balanced by caramel sweetness in taste. Good stuff from Dogfish, as usually.
