2015 BJCP Category: 32B Specialty Smoked Beer (base style: 17D English Barleywine)

AROMA: Peaty malt is prominent. Some dark fruit, vanilla/oak, and alcohol. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Very murky body; rather ugly shade of rusty orange/brown. Small, off white head mostly dissipates; no lacing. 1/3

FLAVOR: Takes a few sips to get used to as the palette seems to change on every swig. Seems like an English barleywine at the core with a rich sweetness of dark malt and dark fruit. Vanilla and oak chips complement each other to give it a slight candy taste. Finishes with a fairly strong peat smoke sensation. Well balanced with smoke acting as a flourish rather than the main attraction. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body; low CO2 but not viscous nor sticky. 11% ABV is well hidden imparting subtle warmth as it goes down. Remarkably clean aftertaste. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: An amazing brewing accomplishment considering all thats in this beer. Delectable, but not quite mind-blowing. 8/10

TOTAL SCORE: 38/50

The beer pours a reddish color with a small head. Aroma has bourbon up front followed by some sweetness and figs. The taste has roasted plums, licorice, mild booze and some raisins. Very complex beer with a smooth finish.

draft that poured a brown color with white head. strong nose old ale/barley wine. strong malt backbone with hints of smoke, vanilla, oak and juniper...oh yes you can smell it. the flavor matches the aroma profile long slow sipper at 11% abv dont be in a rush as it warms the stronger the flavors come out. for me not a true barley wine but more of an old ale. either way its good.

As smooth a barley wine as Ive encountered though the finish does have a zippy, alcohol-influenced tingle. The aroma is very thick, and with a little effort reveals vanilla and yeast with hints of smoke. The taste is evenly sweet and not too heavy. Poured from a bottle.

Pours natural maple syrup brown, slight foam head. Aroma of caramel notes, toast, wood, warm & sweet. First sip sweetish on back tongue, hides alcohol content. Smooth, aftertaste is lightly sweet, almost scotchy. Good beer for after dinner. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
