Strong but I let it age for a year in a dark closet and it seemed to mellow some. Still a favorite. Re-Rate: After trying some that I aged even longer this is even better. It’s got a character all it’s own. Great smokey flavor, wonderful vanilla aftertaste. ;) marykobes (5) - USA - SEP 5, 2003 does not count
I loved this beer. It has a vanilla flavor and ambered colored. Strong in alcohol but is a great beer. mkobes (2142) - paramus, New Jersey, USA - SEP 5, 2003
i really liked this beer. Very nice flavor. One of my favorites from Dogfish Head. Very nice flavor of vanilla with a amber color. Strong Alcohol content. YogiBeera (2569) - New Jersey, USA - NOV 25, 2003
UPDATED: JAN 4, 2004 Raisons malt, alcohol and chocolate aroma. Little head, leaving laces on the glass. Red amber color. Malt, alcohol taste, but soft. Also peppery and tones of raspberry are tasteable. Smooth, kind of short aftertaste. Also kind of edgy, but great taste and only short, then great balance.
RERATE on tap at Dogfish Head:Nothing edgy. Round, smooh and wonderful. Delicous and after trying it on tap over and over and again and when bottled over and over ágain, a decesion is made: My favorite Number 1 Barley Wine. xsketchyx (184) - Oregon, USA - FEB 9, 2004
UPDATED: FEB 24, 2004 The best beer I've ever had. Every time I try it, it only gets better and better. Thick vanilla-syrup flavor, apple and smoke... finish is alchoholic... this beer just coats your entire mouth

I love love loved this brew. My first perfect five. Looks great, very complex aroma and taste, a zillion things going on and like no other beer Ive ever had. Smooth with hints of sweetness and some smoky undertones tastes and feels like a great scotch without the alcohol bite....the oak aging is very subtle and perfect. Amazing. jerich01 (16) - USA - JUN 5, 2010
Really balanced beer and a "big" beer. If more wine lovers would taste beers like this with open minds, beer would take it’s rightful place as a complex and delicious beverage worthy of great respect. ffbot (420) - Oakland, California, USA - APR 10, 2016
Pour is a still, almost but not quite clear red with light purple and orange hints to it. Smell is maple, vanilla, oak, citrus, maybe a slight pine or grass. Taste is rich complex vanilla, balancing off maple, rich full bodied malt and a long, vanilla finish TheDarkertheBetter99 (27) - Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, USA - DEC 5, 2001
I’m a stout guy. Nearly all my reviews are of stouts. This is a worthy exception. First off, this is HIGHLY alcoholic. This is EXTREMELY aromatic. This is Powerfully flavorful. It is also, however, quite an acquired taste. It’s like nothing else I’ve had. Mike a symphony of flavors. Did that sound cheesy? Well, get ahold of this and you’ll understand. Lock up those car keys before imbibing on this beer! Perkeo (322) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAY 14, 2003
UPDATED: JUN 19, 2003 Re-rate: Had to bump this up, I've come to realize this hyper-complex barleywine is just about my favorite US brewed ale. Truly amazing juice, do not pass up an opportunity to try it!
