4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JAN 4, 2013 Serving: from bottle--purchased at Full Throttle Bottles.
Aroma: moderate aroma of roasted malt and light aroma of chocolate and coffee.
Appearance: average-sized, frothy, light brown, initial head with mostly diminishing longevity and excellent lacing. Dark-brown hued body.
Taste: moderately bitter initial taste with moderate to heavily bitter finish and long duration.
Palate: medium to full bodied with dry texture and lively carbonation.
Overall: very good. A little too bitter finish for my taste, but I’d certainly drink this again.
From Mar 2007
Pours from 12oz bottle a clear deep brown with a small head of foam that doesn't last long and doesn't leave any lacing.
The smell is of roasted malt and some citrus hops.
The taste has huge roasted malt up front that smacks you in the face...just as I remember it. ;^) As I take more sips, there's a more than ample infusion of hop bitterness and some dark fruit notes. Man, this is great stuff! So much roastiness and there's some toffee also hitting my taste buds. And just a little bit of warming in the back of my throat that reminds me to sip and take my time with this gem. What a Brown Ale!
Bottom line: This is a top notch example of the style that is a *must* try. FatPhil (16930) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - OCT 11, 2017

Very savoury aroma, soy, but also very sweet. Dark red, persistent small tight beige head. Dead palate, slickish from sugars, carbonation does nothing to lift it. Nasty soapy taste, some savoury soy mushroom and sugar mess. Only plus is that it covers the 7.2% behind the mess, but deep down this is a terrible ale.
Draft in Pittsburgh before the Ed Sheehan show. Pours a dark brown with generous head. Roasted malt, floral hop, brown sugar, caramel. Medium body. Medium light bitter. Nice texture. It's been awhile since I've he this one but it is still good.

12floz bottle, no date, $1.75 paid as a single, pint glass. Appears a medium-dark brown with some amber glow at the bottom. Head forms a small layer and retains it character. Firmly a brown ale in the nose, aromas of brown sugar and mild roasted malts noted. A fine American brown, resin, tree bark, pine, and faint cocoa flavors comprise this fullish bodied and fairly hoppy dark ale. Ktwse (5341) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - SEP 25, 2017
Pours deep cloudy brown with low tan head. Aroma of roasty malt, sugar, citrus. Taste is roasty, mild lingering bitter finish. Light and smooth body with soft carbonation.

I'm sorry, I just dont agree. All the hops they advertise here get lost on this thick syrupy molasses with a bitter rotten walnut finish. No, not for me. It sounded great, tasted awful. Its almost like it wanted to be a stout, but it just wasn't. I made it bout 7-8 sips in before i called it quits n dumped it. I am a broke ass law student and cant afford to throw away top dollar brew... But life's too short to drink beer u just dont like, even if ya really wanted to. Sorry dogfish, I still love you. Keg at Beaverfest. Subtle is how I'd sum this beer up. Less sugar than I expected in aroma, perhaps some burnt sugar. Otherwise malt, coffee and nuts. Light bitter taste whicb grows in strength. Light-medium bodied. Slock with a sticky residue. Abrupt finish. Good but too subtle to have too much impact.
