Via Hand-Pump: The last thing I tries at the philly real ale fest and its strong, delicious flavors still made an impact. Figs and other dark fruits, thick, chewey in the mouth. UPDATED: APR 14, 2006 Maybe I’m just getting tired of beers that are too strong, taste of figs, or beets and carrots and strawberries, and finish like cough syrup. I would have loved this beer a couple of months ago. It has too much alcohol, and tastes like a raison d’etre on a fruit cake, which I guess it is. Not bad as a dessert beer. Somehow this one just works out be less than the sum of its ratings. Rerated on 5 May. The balance is better than I initial thought. The flavor is as good or better. And the beer is perfect with hot and sour soup, barbecued pork, or hunan food in general. Works much better than a lager, much better than a plum wine. // Trying it again after a couple of years and I like it even less than before. I still love the brewer. I really, really don’t like the style. It’s too strong, too fruity, with too much obvious alcohol. If I’m going to drink extreme beer, I’ll stick with their WW Imperial Stout. Pours orange-yellow with a slight head. Aroma to me is a mix of apples and alcohol, but that doesn't mean it ain't other stuff. Flavor is rich and malty, with a big sweetness and an alcohol burn. Bottled at a RB gathering in Philly. Was a little disappointed in this one. The only thing I tasted was malt, which was a little thin, and alcohol.

Light pale golden color with a light oily head and a little lacing. The aroma is full of alcohol with some muskat grapes and tons of alcohol along with a brandy-like sweetness. This beer poured a hazy orange amber color and formed a minimal bubbly white lace that left little lace. Some sediment is present with just a small amount of carbonation. An aroma of malt, a bit of hops and caramel with a touch of citrus. A flavor of malt, and carmel with a hint of the alcohol present. The finish is of a medium body and slightly sweet with a warming aspect of alcohol.

great nose (thick and unoffensive liquor, deep and sappy fruity forest, hmm... something, etc.) ! but the whole is off from what i expected. perhaps it needs to age. the palate doesn’t support its flavor. it feels as if the mouthful should carry more complexity and what i sense is a sweet fig newton that dies into a dry and bitter nothingness. it looks purdy, however, no justice can be served for now. in any case, it's still good ;o) the aroma is what is most striking - great aroma! haukur (2103) - Kópavogur, ICELAND - MAY 1, 2004
UPDATED: MAY 2, 2004 Peaches and plums were dominant in the aroma. Friots were too dominant in taste, a hoppy brew but not for my likings .. a let down for a barley wine
