COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay. This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

From the bottle pours black with a fast falling tan head. Oily palate with big roasty flavors, very roasty sweet with a prune and charred chocolate flavor. A bit of spiciness comes through in the finish, a bit hot, a mild sting to the nose with a warm licorice flavor and some earthy/woodiness.

AmEricanbrew (7080) - Same Trailer, Different Park, Louisiana, USA - AUG 12, 2008
Black with a fleeting head. Big sweet anise cotten candy aroma with pit fruits. Medium heavy body with light carbonation. Heavy sweet flavors of brown sugar, prunes, and black licorice, not much wood aging in the taste. A big sipper beer here.

12 oz bottle, Black with a brown head. toffee and alcohol nose, some chocolate and a whiff of wood. Sweeter than expected, chocolate and sweet malt, the alcohol is present but far less pronounced than the nose led me to believe. Vanilla and woody notes, dark brown sugar and fig. Far more drinkable than I could have imagined. A pleasant surprise.

Pours a three finger light brown head that fades quickly to a ring leaving traces of lace. Totally black color. Light carbonation and heavy bodied. Malty nose. Flavor is sweet roasted chocolate, no wood, high ABV is hidden, mellow finish. $4.20 for a 12oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

Deep brown. Thick, sticky body. Inviting aroma of chocolate, dark fruit, malts, cherry, and vanilla. Flavor starts a little unimpressive, but comes on strong as it goes. Roasted, caramel, chocolate, malts, dark, ripe fruit, and light vanilla round out the flavor. A very nice brew.

FROTHINGSLOSH (8362) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 10, 2008
Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a thick black color with a large very dark brown head that lingered. It looked alot like an imperial stout rather than a brown ale. The aroma was port wine, tangy cherry and a touch of wood. The flavor was rich, roasty and sweet with noted cherry, wood, vanilla and a hint of chocolate. The body was wonderfully thick and creamy and hid the 12% alcohol very well. The finish was dryish port wine. Marvelous!

GABF 2007. Vintage 2006. A pitch black beer with a orange-brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of both chocolate and coffee. The flavor is sweet with notes of coffee, cocoa beans, oil, alcohol, wood, and caramel, leading to a alcoholic and woody finish. The body is strong.

jackzodiac (12) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - AUG 10, 2008
Thick, foamy, caramely-brown head that dissolves within minutes and leaves some thin lacing. Very dark in color, almost black. Sweet, malty aroma with some vanilla notes and minor hints of fruits. Smooth yet heavy mouthfeel with a rich, caramely-sweet flavor and hints of everything from coffee and chocolate to brown sugar and bananas. And a very prominent, lingering aftertaste. One of Dogfish Head’s boldest, most flavorful brews.
