2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
The beer is auburn hued. Autumnal colors of ruby, crimson, russet. Small off white head that fades pretty quickly to a thin, wispy layer atop the beer. The aroma offers sweet malt, toffee, raisins, brown sugar, clove, a touch of holiday spice. Really sweet throughout. Bitter kick in the finish. Sweet raisins soaked in the booze. Fun to try, but best in small quantities. Too sweet. I don't consider this in the Belgian style at all. Where is the yeast and bread character that is so appreciated and associated with a Belgian strong dark ale? I appreciate the fact that Sam brews interesting beers, but I won't return to this one.

May 28, 2017. Flight selection at DFH brewpub in Rehoboth. Outstanding Belgian strong...smoky, oak flavor...long caramel, sugary finish. Will be looking for this in the future. BeerRenter76 (1035) - Texas, USA - MAY 9, 2017
Originally rated on 1/2/2009.A nice deep brown with a slight reddish tint body, off white head that left plenty of lace. Flavor was a disappointment with mostly a metallic presence that dominated the other flavors. I guess this was a bad bottle, maybe i might try it again someday. Dark clear, brown / reddish pour with thick beige foam. Full body with less fizz and a thick, sweet finish. Dried fruit in the nose and caramel, nutty malts, burnt sugar. Some light bitterness, but this is all about the malt mingling with the fruit. The finish has a little yeast and alcohol. A strong, complex approach to a Belgian that would compliment a range of flavorful foods.

Pours dark brown with whitish head. Aroma of dark fruits, belgian yeast, caramel malts. Just the same in the mouth. Medium body with low to medium carbonation. Sticky palate. Somehow decent, not that good but not that bad after all.

On tap at DFH. The mouthfeel is smooth but there’s a banana yeasty taste I’m not a fan of. tia (2228) - Sandston, Virginia, USA - DEC 10, 2016
Sampler at brewery. Copper color, minimal head. Smells like tobacco and fruit. Dry Lightly bitter. PhillyCraft (7923) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 21, 2016
Vtg backlog, bottle, always preferred the old extra to this one. Brown pour with a medium khaki sized head. Smell is vegetable, dark fruit, spice, and belgian yeast. Taste is plum, fig, candy sugar, and light hops. Ok, but prefer St Bernardus and Rochefort. drsordr (2861) - Loveland, Ohio, USA - SEP 14, 2016
Can’t believe I have never rated this. Draft to taster at cappy’s pour dark copper with thin ecru head. Nose sweet malt, raisin, caramel, apple. Taste similar to nose, sweet early, then raisin, sweet, and fruit. Later light dank. rgf001 (351) - Austin, Texas, USA - JUN 15, 2016
Aroma is nice but too low for a Belgian strong ale. Foam is too short lasting. Flavor is malty but not complex. Medium finish, should be dry.
