A modern update on a 9th century Finnish proto-beer. Brewed with rye, we caramelize the wort with white hot river rocks, then ferment it with a German Weizen yeast. In addition to juniper berries foraged directly from the Finnish country-side we added a sort of tea made with coriander, cardamom, lemon grass, Indian Black Tea, and ramps leaves. The spicing is subtle and balanced and Sahtea is a highly-quaffable, truly-unique brew with a full-mouth feel.

Bottle. The pour was a hazy orange with a slight brown tint and had a thin (less than 1 finger) white frothy head that dissipated quickly, which in turn do not produce any significant lacing. The aroma was of a light bread malt and a sweet doughy yeast with hints of nutmeg, coriander, brown sugar, cinnamon, clove, banana, a bit of citrus and a infusion of tea. The taste was malty and very sweet with hints of nutmeg, brown sugar and banana early on with the flavor getting a getting a bit spicier with notes of coriander, clove, a mild black tea presence and a nice dose of citrus (lemon I believe) at the end. The flavor lasted only a short while after the swallow with a nice smooth spicy finish. Mouthfeel was just about medium in body and rather creamy in texture with a very mild carbonation. Overall a very sweet tasting brew with a lot of the fall spices, very reminiscent of a Pumpkin Ale.

Bottle courtesy of TATTORSO. Thanks Jeff! A light hazy orange golden colour, it gives about an inch of foam and has some nice sticky lacing. Ok, the smell really is different. Im getting some spice like cinnamon and nutmeg, grain and what must be the Chai that they speak of, juniper...weird smelling and Im not sure how to react. If this nose is to the style, I cant knock it. Actually, the more whiffs I take, the more it grows on me. The taste is honey sweet with a graininess, chai(?), strong spiciness(see smell), some banana flavour....as weird a taste as the smell. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Plenty of warming is now sneaking up on me. Drinkability? Im totally mixed in my feelings about the smell and taste but one thing is clear to me. This is a unique brew and in its uniqueness, I cant see myself having this one again but I thank Jeff for giving me a chance to try it.

Multiple bottles in 2010, Shared this one with Pat, pours hazy orange with a thicker sized foam. Smell and taste are lemon lime juniper, cinnamon, german malt, cardamom, all spice, and other dark earthy notes. Probably over spiced even for the ingredients but Ive always liked Indian profiles especially Hashish.

Pours a clear amber color. Aromas of pine/malts and a touch of citrus/berries. Flavor is a little different. I thought it would be more pine tasting. A little berry flavor and some hop bitterness near the end.

Bottle - good size foamy head, hazy burnt orange color with lots of "floaties" (maybe bad poor?), big fruity/berry aroma and flavor, moderate spice (from the tea I guess), a little different but in a good way overall ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear Amber color. $12.99/750ml is pricey versus alternatives in this market. Just not true to original style.
