2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 9/20
On tap at Ramshead, Annapolis, MD. AA clear, amber colored beer topped by a dense, off-white head. Some curtains. Wort, malts and a generic fruityness in the aroma. The flavor has some yeast and a decent bitterness as well as the wort-like malts and fruityness. It’s dry and nicely carbonated, medium body. Lasting fruity and malty finish with a yeasty touch. Not much Belgian going on here. 150621

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 5/3/2013. Pours moderately cloudy deep orange color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of orange, pear, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, biscuit, light honey, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and pale malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of orange, pear, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, herbal, grass, biscuit, light honey, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of orange, pear, apple, light banana, clove, pepper, herbal, grass, biscuit, light honey, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and pale malt flavors; with a nice crisp malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice saison. Good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appearance: deep orange gold, short light yellow head, minimal lacing. Aroma: sweet nose, with honey, orange zest, some candied ginger and clove. Taste: honeyed graham crackers, clove, yeast, some caramel. Finish: lingering sweetness, some apricot and marmalade over yeast, slightly boozy. Notes: Extremely sweet for the style. Not a bad beer, that’s for sure, but it doesn’t feel like a saison. So, dock points for style, but not too many because it’s overall a good beer. On draft at hidden gem Quench! in Silver Spring, MD.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle from Beers of Europe, part of the ’drink a few saisons before trying to brew one’ series. I guess I learned a few mistakes to avoid from this one. A kind of mid-amber colour with quite obvious particles in suspension. Maybe this is ’farmhouse’. Sweet and cloying, way too sweet for a saison, dripping in booze. In one sense it’s actually nice enough to drink as a Belgian Strong or something, tastes nice enough. Actually tastes like the first Belgian homebrew I ever attempted, which I would have pretty much given the above review to. As a saison, poor. On its own terms, pleasant!
