Bottle from Capone’s and Wegman’s Collegeville. Pours dark brown, hazy, with off-khaki head. Nose is dark malt, chocoff, brown sugar, hazelnut, toffee. Tastes smooth, rich, very malty, with some dark choc, malt, slight hop, spice, nut, and roasty rauchy notes. Well made and great. lagermonkey (725) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - JUN 6, 2010
Pours black as night with a thin brown head that quickly evaporates to nothing at all. Smells of roasty malt, mixed with dark fruit and a just hint of smoke.
No surprises in the mouth as it reflects the nose almost perfectly. Roasty and dark fruit (raisiny) with a fairly chewy body but creamy as well. The roasted malt and fruit mix nicely and the creamy texture makes it go down smooth. The alcohol sneaks up on you a bit since there’s nary a hint of booziness. Creamy, mocha-like finish and a lingering roastiness in the aftertaste.
It’s as straightforward as a Baltic Porter can be, balanced the fruitiness and the roastiness well and is smooth as velvet. What’s not to like? Six years is a long time to wait between samples...but I think they have improved the recipe since then zdk (1917) - New York, New York, USA - JUN 1, 2010
Bottle at Max and Andy’s Fantasy Tasting. - molasses, roasty with some vineous notes. Sweet, prunes and dark fruity. A bit sour at the finish. Tasty, overall Dickinsonbeer (5074) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - MAY 2, 2010
Bottle at Andy and Max’s fantasy tasting. Pours a nice deep dark charcoal brown near black with a nice lasting tight beige head. Aroma is lightly hopped, a touch of mint and pine over big chocolate malts, smooth nutty sweetness, toast, and light burnt hint with a touch of diacetyl but still good. Flavor is clean, with good chocolate hints, roast, toffee moderate sweetness and a light leathery earthy finish to dry it out some. Solid porter. ajm (1072) - Los Angeles, California, USA - MAY 2, 2010
Bottle bonus from tarheels86. This was pretty good, actually. Nose was kinda subtle with nice mellow milk chocolate and light roast. Flavor is very much the same - not exactly as rough as most really Baltic Baltic Porters I’ve had - roast, chocolate, light licorice, cane sugar.
