COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Occasional. Also available Bottle Conditioned.

This imperial stout has an abundance of chocolate and roasted coffee flavours and aromas. Inspired by our brewers Italian family, this silky smooth, rich stout is balanced by a plentiful supply of powerful resinous hops to match the high alcoholic strength.

50cl bottle bought at the Winchester X-mas market. It has a dark brown, almost black color. There is almost no head. The body is very light for an RIS. Its like whole milk with delicate bubbles. The flavors are light for this style. Much less intensive and welcoming then the aroma that vehicles strong toffee, vanilla, burned caramel, desert coffee, nuts etc. Taste ? Nothing like that. It tastes like a simple, watery stout with some alcohol in it. Still it doesnt feel like 9%. But then It doesnt feel like a 9% RIS ....

500ml dark bottle, unfiltered, from the brewer at Winchester Christmas Market. He said it was Roman in memory of his Italian grandmother who liked strong dark beers. Its robust with a good body and some blackcurrant and chocolate flavours. Theres little sweetness - the dark roast asserts itself quite soon, followed by strong hops. Its OK, drinkable, but just a little dry and heavy. Theres no awareness of this being an Imperial Stout, its more like a robust dry stout. Theres no sign of the abv, and none of the normal interesting balsamic vinegar flavour of a good Imperial Stout. For all the body and strength of flavour and alcohol, this is a little disappointing. More than that, the unredeeming bitterness and soberness is too much for me. Halfway through the bottle I have now given up, and put in two big spoons of sugar. Thats better! So, all in all, not my sort of beer. Shame, I was looking forward to it.

Cask at the Le Gothique Wandsworth Beer Festival on 29 March 2012. Poured black, with a rocky tan head. Aroma was slightly subdued, but there was definite roasted malt, dark cocoa and slight Oxo. Thick, full palate. Dark fruit flavours, with oily bitterness and coffee. Finish was dark fruit, burnt malt and toasted bread.

Cask-conditioned, on gravity, at Bristol Beer Festival, March 2014. Near black with a thin, off-white head. Dense, roasted malts, some dark chocolate and a touch of hedgerow hops, before a toasty finish. Good.
