Tap @ The BeerMongers... Poured jet black with a bubbly white head. Lots of citrus and pine, residual hop bitterness with a light to medium body and mild ashy roast. Some vegetable qualities with a moderate bitterness. Nicely complex with loads of hop flavor for the 5%-ish alcohol. ngeunit1 (1555) - Waltham, Massachusetts, USA - AUG 30, 2011
A - Served a fairly dark black-brown color with some light coming through around the edges. There was a finger of frothy tannish head that faded slowly leaving behind some spotty lacing.
S - The aroma was a really nice balance of roasted/slightly burnt sweet malts and some piney hops.
T - Starts off with some growing pine hops flavor and some bitterness alongside. Tjhe slightly burnt chocolate/caramel malts come in right after. Through the middle, the bitterness gets a bit stronger and there is some coffee flavor that sneaks in. The finish is a nice mix of roasted flavors with some pine hops and bitterness lingering.
M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. The beer feels smooth with and quite dry due to the hops and roasted/burnt flavors.
D - Very drinkable. Well balanced Black IPA with the roasted flavors and hops staying really nicely balanced throughout. badlizard (5533) - Berkeley, California, USA - JUL 30, 2011
Black with a fizzy white head. Huge citrus hops pine and roasted grain aroma. Wow. Dark grain chocolate burnt coffee citrus and pine taste. marcus (10865) - Sacramento, California, USA - JUN 30, 2011
On tap at Drakes Barrel House. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head and a fruity aroma. There is a very dry treacle flavor that sticks to the palate along with some good hop bitterness.. Lagunitasfan (1323) - San Diego, California, USA - JUN 23, 2011
On tap at SD Brew co. Lt. Black but thin. Brown tints. Nose high sweet hops and malt. Taste initial sharp and sweet hops immediately overpowered by roast malt. Ipa factor gone immediately. Roast to sweet gooey malt assault everything else. Just ok.

Draft. Rich black-brown beer with a dark cream colored head. light cocoa and grapefruit aroma with pine. Pine and light roast flavor with grapefruit. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Grapefruit and pine lingers with light cocoa and light roast. Boliv (1150) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 28, 2011
Hand pump at Toronado. Pours very creamy, dark brown and black, with a creamy tan head. Aromas of pine and spruce, heavy earthy and bark notes, and cocoa/chocolate. The flavor is equally piney, with bittering cocoa and some coffee present, as well as caramel sweetness in the finish. A creamy, silky mouthfeel, and exceptionally drinkable. Very good. On tap. Pours with an opaque black body with a lasting tan head. Good lacing. Aromas are very fruity, passionfruit, molasses, brown sugar, rye, light crystal. Bready, coffee, fruit, citrus. Flavors are dry, roasty, grassy and bitter with a bit of an astringency. Fruity, floral. Finishes dry, roast leaves a bit of dryness on the tongue. Medium bodied with medium bubbles. Tasty. joeneugs (6372) - Livermore, California, USA - MAY 13, 2011
Pours very dark brown with some barely noticeable red at the edges. It has a creamy yet disappearing tan head. The aroma is very floral and piney with more minor notes of grapefruit. Very nice. I’m not sure I would identify this as a black ipa if I was blindfolded, as I pick up virtually zero roasted malt. The flavor has some more roasted qualities, especially in the finish. It actually tastes very dry and bitter with some earthy, piney hops. A bit one dimensional, but not bad. brokensail (16689) - Dublin, California, USA - MAY 7, 2011
A: The pour is dark brown, just about black, in color with a creamy khaki head.
S: Herbal and citrus hops dominate the front end of the nose. There are some floral and fruity notes to it as well. Heavy on the roasted malt and perhaps even some chocolate aromas.
T: Really quite roasty, much more than I was expecting. Some dark chocolate, coffee, and coffee grounds give this more of a stout or porter flavor than Black IPA. Some decent hoppiness, with floral and citrus notes, but overshadowed by the roast.
M: Medium in body and carbonation.
O: An interesting take on this style. I would have preferred a more hop forward approach.
