Another sad casualty of my great desire to cellar everything. Thankfully these masterfully brewed/produced beers held up well and are still worth drinking/rating.
Dark violet-tinged mahogany, with ample clarity and a deep beige head that fades to a ring.
Bourbon in the nose is quite reserved yet identifiable and enjoyable, providing spice and very light fruit. Figs, raisins, prunes and strong caramel are all behind it, with tons of vinous characteristics and a touch of sourdough. Oxidation, obviously present, isn’t obnoxious, nor does it present any cardboard character, but mostly just soy and vanilla. Alcohol wonderfully integrate/concealed.
Marzipan, prunes, vanilla, toffee-caramel and light soy in the flavor allow just a touch of spicy bourbon, with a still-chewy texture and light carbonation. Grapes, figs, and more such flavors abound, with just a light sourdough-like sourness and sweet, fruit-laced caramel notes lingering. I can see why this beer was so acclaimed in its time. Obviously past its prime now, but the fact that it’s still aged gracefully in these tiny bottles is a real testament. Furthermore, any problems with too much sweetness are very much gone.

Almost opaque dark brown beer, no real head. Zero carbonation in the otherwise neutral palate. Slightly sour wood with mild coconut, not too sweet. Mellow bourbon. Simple stuff but beautifully mellow.
/11/11/12/13/11

Thanks tyler. Nice hazy reddish brown pour with no head. Aroma has notes of bourbon, vanilla, some oxidized hops. Taste is sweet vanilla and bourbon, touch of chocolate, with a slight boozy finish. Awesome brew, nice balanced notes. Nice brew! MatSciGuy (924) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - APR 22, 2011
[Bottle] shared by Tyler. Thanks! Pours clearish caramel with no head. Aroma is slightly vinous, I get more brandy than bourbon, caramel, light infection, and a touch of vanilla. Flavor is not quite as nice, but I did get the yeast pour. Spicy alcohol, plenty of caramel, a touch of fruitiness, presumably from the light infection. But it’s actually not too bad.

Bottle shared by tyler. Thanks! Slightly hazy brown pour, no head, no lacing. Aroma is slight booze, oxidized hops, some sweet malt. Quite a bit of dark fruit character. Raisins, dates, dark fruits, and lots of them. Really interesting flavor. Perhaps slightly infected, with an odd funk and slightly sour character. Actually quite boozy on the end. Not great. 4-5 year old bottle shared by Tyler. Clear dark brown pour, no carbonation and an aroma of alcohol and raisins. Flavor is silky prunes, raisins, leather, very sweet caramel and still finishes pretty hot for being an older beer. nimbleprop (8928) - SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA - DEC 28, 2010
Mini 7oz bottle pours a hazy brown with zero head. Nose is sweet, boozy, rum, woody, light vanilla, oak, cognac, figs. A touch oxidized. Flavor is sweet, boozy, rum, whiskey, chocolate, caramel, apple. Full bodied. Finish is still hot. GT (10017) - San Diego, California, USA - DEC 21, 2010
6oz ultra mini bottle at DC Elite. The final beer of the night after about 40+ beers tried. So needless to say, I have no recollection of ever trying this beer; but here are the notes jotted down in what I would consider still legible handwriting. Poured a clear, flat, deep amber to mahogany with no head formation. Aroma of leather, rich malt, intense bourbon, toffee, mild oxidation. Taste is boozy, rich leather, powerfully viscous maple, toffee, and malt syrup. Brown sugar and slight vinous qualities come through. Very nice.
Bottle. Brown. Flat. Aroma. Caramel. Taste. Caramel. Some. Vanilla. Pretty. Straightforward. Stuff. Not. Bad.
