Silver Medal winner for Imperial India Pale Ale, Great American Beer Festival 2009. Besides Jolly Roger, this is probably Drakes most renowned beer. An Imperial (or Double) IPA, Denogginizer is a big bold beer hopped with an abundant amount of Simcoe and Amarillo with a touch of Ahtanum and Chinook. Mashed with Crystal malt and Caramalt for color and flavor to help balance out the hop assault. Denogginizer is also Drakes most powerful regular offering, at a whopping 10% alcohol by volume!

Bomber. Amber with an off white head. Pine resin hops with a malt backbone, alcohol - very over the top and not subtle which I usually enjoy but this seems almost like a little much - may need to mellow a bit. Full bodied, low carbonation (although would not have though that considering how it poured), bite from the alcohol, some sweetness but the bitterness grown and becomes astringent; that being said it mellows a bit on on the finish, malt and hops along with booze are at the forefront along with the resin from the nose.

655 ml bottle. Cloudy dark brown colour. Medium off-white head. Bold grapefruity floral hop aroma. Dusty and bready. Quite bitter and has a sharp edge, but theres enough malt to balance. Lots of citrus. Sweet and rich. Nicely balanced, but favours the sharper bitterness. Very nice, but gets tiring after a while.

Heavy duty IPA. I let it warm a bit out of the fridge first. Poured a large, off white, thick, foamy, creamy head that slowly settles out and a little lace. Color is a very clear orange amber with a number of slow tiny bubble trails. Aroma is hugely hop resin, pine, grapefruit, with malt and caramel. Flavor is very close to nose with only the added benefit of carbonic tang to more evenly balance the mix. Body is perfect: full, not to soft or sharp, mouthfilling without being thick and just right carbonation. Finish is like flavor and surprisingly of only average length and slight alcohol warmth. Its a hop blaster, set on stunning.

An intense aroma of bitter hops and grapefruit. This is a tasty IPA, definitely not a subtle one. Tons of bitter hops from the start, but the finish is truly interesting, as the bitterness and the citrus battle back and forth. Pretty good stuff.

Draft at GABF. Pours a deep amber, which isnt a good sign in an IIPA, to me. Light haze. Nose has a lot of fruity and resiny hops, citrus, then a big malty blast. Lacks popping hops in nose. On tasting, more of the same. Less fruity, lacks the nice citrus notes. The caramel malts also push the balance towards maltiness. Really big bitterness just not quite right for me.

Heres yet another very solid IPA/IIPA from the left side. Amber color with a thick off-white head that dies down to a very thin layer. The aroma has that lemony citrus smell with a twist of pine and just a little caramel for the malt. The flavor offers a little more sweet malt than the aroma had me thinking but the hops are sharp and bitter, covering much of that up. A resiny-pine hop punch dominates the flavor. Surprisingly, theres not much of a tropical fruit component, if any, here. I do prefer these more tropical than pine/resiny but no big deal. This is fairly smooth going down but the alcohol is not hidden. I guess you can say it tastes imperial with big hops, sweet toffee, and some alcohol, but it doesnt get too sticky on the palate. Again, the bitterness is sharp and this gets quite dry in the finish. This isnt in my top tier of IIPAs but it might be in the next group.

Dark copper-amber color with a medium head. Fresh hops aromas abount with notes of orange and pine bark and pine wood with some interesting honey sweetness. Pleasant, moderate bitterness with full hop and malt flavors are supported by a substantial body and a well-balanced alcohol character.

660 ml bottle.
Pours a hazy copper colour with a small, thick, white head. Aroma of fresh floral hops, caramel malts, toffee and some hay. Flavour of caramel malts, fresh hops, toffee, hay and some floral notes. Medium bodied, thick mouthfeel and a long, hoppy, bitter, fruity finish. Well balanced.

660ml bottle from Bierkompass

Pours dark orange with a sticky foamy head. Aroma has notes of exotic fruits, caramel malts, toffee and butter. Taste starts out quite sweet but exotic hops and massive bitterness kicks in fast. Bitter, quite warming finish. Sweet, but well balanced and hoppy IIPA.
