sampled at the San Diego Strong Ale Festival Nov 2007, an event shared with what seemed liked hundreds of ratebeerians and enjoyed mostly through a straw, since my face was a bloody mess of scabs and stitches. This sample form the tap came almost black with a interesting sour aroma. UPDATED: FEB 5, 2008 Outstanding! A double red that pours as black as a stout and tastes brown. Has an apple quality and darker - like a date or caramelized brown sugar and chocolate - but is very much on the malty side so the sweetness has a burly thickness that I have not encountered. Draft at Pizza Port Carlsbad 02/01/08. Pours a dark mahogany with a heavy malt aroma. Has a distinctive double red taste, but focused solidly on the malt. The hop character is heavily subdued and the taste has some raisin flavor. Finish is sweet and has a slightly toasted aftertaste. On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Deep mahogany color with amber edges and a good beige head with lace. Sweet toffee, slightly roasty aroma with some sort of burnt or ash nose. The flavor is pretty damn sweet, pretty near to being a sugar bomb. It has some spicy undertones with a large malt statement. The finish has little hops presence and a sweet sugary and dry character.

Draft. Rich ruby/mahogony beer with a nice tan head. Roasty, chocolate, citrus aroma. Chocolate, light roast, caramel, citrus flavor with good backing hops. Alcohol present. On tap at PP Carlsbad. I thought I would see it on tap at the strong ale festival, but I guess I missed it. Lots of malty aroma. Almost tastes underattenuated at first. Blackish dark, dark amber red color. A little biscuit flavor. Small head of small bubbles. Something is a little off, but I can tell what it is. Leans sweet and a hint cloying. Tap @ 2007 Strong Ale Fest. Poured a dark brown color with an off-white head. The aroma was very doughy with a hint of roast. The flavor was roasty with notes of chocolate and mild dough. Draft at Toronado. Darker brown color with a tannish head. Aroma was very sweet and sugary - apples, chocolate, dark fruits, brown sugar. Flavor is very sugary and a tad alcoholic - apples, brown sugar, caramel, candy, some chocolate. Nice mouthfeel. I had a cold during my recent West Coast trip so maybe I didn’t pick up the harshness noticed by other raters, but I found this to be full bodied, sweet, well-rounded, and overall enjoyable. Off tap it poured a dark black with tan foam head. A sharp alcohol and fruit aroma waifed from this beer. Wow, this beer floods the palate. Lots of chocolate malty tones with an almost apricot fruity flavor ending in a hoppy bitterness and hot alcohol vapor that almost makes your eyes water. Not a smooth easy drinking beer. There are lots of things to taste in this beer. I think it could use some aging to meld and tone down the flavors.
