after years of scallywagging about and dallying with any style that caught its fancy, good ole JR is returning to its original form, an American Barleywine. Originally crafted as a holiday brew that Drakes brewers could get behind, Jolly had all the warming powers of malt and alcohol, minus the strange holiday beer ubiquitousness of overpowering pie spices, and finished with the open handed smack of bold Northwest American hops. The 2012 Jolly Rodger is full-bodied with rich caramel malt undertones and mild biscuit malt character. Sufficient additions of West Coast hops balance the malt with pine needle aromatics and satisfying bitterness.

Pours clear, intense coppery reddish with thick, rocky white-off top, rich lasing. Aroma - pure caramel, berries, candy with pine-spruce hoppy touch. Taste is sweet with just a bit more then average bitter for BW or IIPA type brews. Pine aftertaste, medium bitter one. Thick, carbonization-melting mouthfeel, gentle astringent palate, medium+ body. Nice brew, but didnt surprised me.

Bottle pour at home. Dark red pour with a thin white head. Strong alcohol aroma, with a smooth roasted caramel flavor. Taste hides alcohol well. Very good tasting beer overall.

Bottle, Brew Dog.com. Dark copper pour with a small yet lingering off-white head. Sweet malt, fragrant hop and bready notes in the nose. Brown sugar, sweet malts, up front booze , a little summer fruit and hops aplenty flavour-wise. Robust bitterness. Thoroughly enjoyable brew that punches its weight. Lovely.

Sample at First Sunday. Pours brown, with a medium, beige head. The aroma is hay, chalk, corn syrup, and some biscuity notes. Very sweet, with a nice spicy bitterness. Heavy body, sticky, but a little thin. Overall, this is a very nice barley wine. Good low-level hopping, and super-malty.

Bottle 650ml (Bierkompass)
Clear dark amber color, steady beige head. Aroma has pine needle hoppyness, toffee and hints of licorice and alcohol. Medium to full bodied. Front is salty then slightly toffeish maltyness leading to piney and resiny finish and aftertaste. Ryeish notes. A bit alcoholic. Powerful but simplish.

Orange pour with a white head. The aroma has some toffee and pine notes. The flavor is a mix of pine and orange from the hops as well as some caramel and toffee that help keep the bitterness down. I also get a bit of alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Thanks Chris and Meredith! Bottle. The aroma escapes the instant I break the caps seal -- rich with warming sugar and a sense of home. It carries almost 2 feet from the goblet! The beer is deep brown, like stained oak furniture. The head is firm and stoic. The beer drinks with an amazing balance, rich with baked brown sugar and warming ethanol, laced with some pine and citric acidity. Remarkably easy to drink for its depth and strength. Amazing stuff.
