COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
after years of scallywagging about and dallying with any style that caught its fancy, good ole JR is returning to its original form, an American Barleywine. Originally crafted as a holiday brew that Drakes brewers could get behind, Jolly had all the warming powers of malt and alcohol, minus the strange holiday beer ubiquitousness of overpowering pie spices, and finished with the open handed smack of bold Northwest American hops. The 2012 Jolly Rodger is full-bodied with rich caramel malt undertones and mild biscuit malt character. Sufficient additions of West Coast hops balance the malt with pine needle aromatics and satisfying bitterness.

65 cl bottle @ RIP Camp.
Pours clear orange color with a small head. Aroma of resinous hops, grass, caramel malts, toffee notes, wet cardboard and apricot. Flavor of resin, caramel malts, some citric fruits and goose berries. Bitter fruity palate with a bit too strong malty and resinous finish. Not bad though.

Medium, cream-coloured head over finely carbonated brownish orange beer. Sharpish initial nose of alcohol and ink. Some hints at seewater/food (sepia?). Then more classical sweet-nutty, caramel induced aromas. Even a bit cheesy. Bitter, going over in roasted-sweet, caramelly and even syrupy notes. The hop is present, but cannot control the ubiquitous caramel. There is some balance, but me seems theres not much going on for a big barley wine. Aftertaste shows some spiciness, and again a hint at cheese. Very slick, onctuous but not really overfully bodied as some - theres restraint here, which is a good thing. Yeah, its worthwile, but it wont drive me wild.

22oz bottle, shared by DanielCoor. Mostly clear reddish amber color. Good thin khaki head. Solid lace. Bigger body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Kind of creamy. Nice spicy hop profile. Some chocolate. Light dark fruit. More sweet taste, though not cloying at all. Light bitter. Nice spicy hop, kind of earthy. Great stuff.

655 ml. bottle sampled @ Pure Apricot Tasting. Thanks! Hope that this is the version that I had, I remember someone reading the label & saying distinctly that this was a Barley Wine. GUSHER! Darker amber brown, little head. Sweet herbal, candy, caramel nose. Taste is bitter herbal, sweetish malt, candy, caramel, brown sugar, biscuit, herbal hop finish, Med. thicker malty body. Nice but nothing stellar.

Bottle at Deanos monthly tasting, September 2013. Poured a clear dark amber with a thin frothy white head. The aroma is malty with some caramel. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a big malty liqourice palate. More of a DIPA than a Barley Wine for me.
