COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
after years of scallywagging about and dallying with any style that caught its fancy, good ole JR is returning to its original form, an American Barleywine. Originally crafted as a holiday brew that Drakes brewers could get behind, Jolly had all the warming powers of malt and alcohol, minus the strange holiday beer ubiquitousness of overpowering pie spices, and finished with the open handed smack of bold Northwest American hops. The 2012 Jolly Rodger is full-bodied with rich caramel malt undertones and mild biscuit malt character. Sufficient additions of West Coast hops balance the malt with pine needle aromatics and satisfying bitterness.

Had aged very well, but a bit too dry and bitter for my taste. Would have expected it to be a bit more complex. For this money I would buy something else next time.

Warms the throat. Orange, toffee, marmalade and caramel - a little like brandy. Great desert beer. Plenty of hoppy bitterness with citrus and exotic fruit but it takes a bit of a back seat.

Bottle at Bolime tasting 3/2016. Hazy orange-amber colour, sediment. Poor head retention. Quite assertive hoppiness despite the age. Sherry notes, dried fruits, citrusy zesty hops. High bitterness. Light alcohol warmth. Very good.

Bottle. Bolime tasting. Hazy amber colour, almost no head. Aroma malts, bisquity, caramel, some nuts, assertively hoppy - which is quite interesting due to its age. Taste hoppy, malts, caramel, bisquity, alcohol. High bitterness, also in aftertaste. Good.

Bottle 65cl shared by Dominique. A cloudy amber beer with low head. Nose is on caramel, alcohol and oak notes. Aroma is on toasted malt, quite bitter, grassy hops, peppery hops, light chocolate touch, not that complex. Finish is on dry burnt caramel and hops bitterness.
