after years of scallywagging about and dallying with any style that caught its fancy, good ole JR is returning to it’s original form, an American Barleywine. Originally crafted as a holiday brew that Drake’s brewers could get behind, Jolly had all the warming powers of malt and alcohol, minus the strange holiday beer ubiquitousness of overpowering pie spices, and finished with the open handed smack of bold Northwest American hops. The 2012 Jolly Rodger is full-bodied with rich caramel malt undertones and mild biscuit malt character. Sufficient additions of West Coast hops balance the malt with pine needle aromatics and satisfying bitterness.

Bottle. A dense brown color with a lush tan head. A strong hoppy nose as it warms but almost nonexistent when cold. A sweet malty flavor with a strong hop finish.

emdejes (96) - Gent, BELGIUM - JAN 26, 2017
Had aged very well, but a bit too dry and bitter for my taste. Would have expected it to be a bit more complex. For this money I would buy something else next time.

Warms the throat. Orange, toffee, marmalade and caramel - a little like brandy. Great desert beer. Plenty of hoppy bitterness with citrus and exotic fruit but it takes a bit of a back seat.

danlo (3366) - Darlington, Durham, ENGLAND - AUG 26, 2016
1 pt 6 fl oz bottle. Deep orange-brown amber colour with a beige foam head. Malty orange marmalade nose. Taste is malt, caramel, toffee, orange marmalade hoppy boozy and grassy bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry tangy bitter finish. Nicely drinkable.

Bottle. Bolime tasting. Hazy amber colour, almost no head. Aroma malts, bisquity, caramel, some nuts, assertively hoppy - which is quite interesting due to its age. Taste hoppy, malts, caramel, bisquity, alcohol. High bitterness, also in aftertaste. Good.
