Bottle @ Home. Black in color with a finger of tan foam. Really excellent coffee aroma to this beer. Great spicy and cocoa notes. Some bourbon and oak, but not crazy. Has a good bit of roasted malt as well. The flavor isn't quite as good as the nose--has a slight acidity to it. That said, there's still a lot of spicy coffee and cocoa. Stupendous gift from Marcus. Waxed bomber. Pours very dark brown with a transient dark tan head. Aroma of coffee and bourbon. Full bodied. Flavor is coffee, bourbon vanilla, some chocolate, and I think some rye spice. The flavors of coffee, chocolate and bourbon make it hard for me to pin down rye. Think it’s there tho. Smooth. No heat for me. It’s not entirely dry, but the coffee offsets that. Really good ale.

Black pour with a quickly receding tan head ..... Aroma of vanilla, roasted coffee, light oak, chocolate and roasted malts with molasses and berries ..... Taste is of roasted coffee, vanilla, some dry oak, spicy rye, berries and molasses .... Sweet Chocolate and roasted malts ... Bourbon and rye come in on the back end with a slight warming and bitter bite .... Finish is dry and sweet with lingering coffee and bitter rye .... Portrait: Une robe brune-noire avec une rond de mousse. Un nez de café grillé, poivron, chocolat et un léger bourbon. Une bouche simple, piquante en fin de bouche avec un bourbon simple. Il semble qu’il y a quelque chose que je n’ai pas compris de cette bière.
Bronze waxed bomber from Whole Foods PM. Pours turbid black with ta head and fizzy body. Nose is huge rye, molasses, oak, bourbon. Tastes dark malty, with heavy rye, blackstrap molasses, oaky bourbon, and vanilla. Smooth, but some late heat on this one, which does not detract, but I wonder as a beer society if we forgive hot beers more if they have a pirate name or theme? At any rate, that’s a different socio-economic and thematic discussion for another day. This one gets more charred as it warms, and bitter, with the coffee taking over. Pours a dark brown with a small beige head that leaves good lacing. Nose is of green pepper and coffee. Taste is of coffee, chocolate and surprisingly, not too much rye/bourbon. Some wood. Pours jet black with low beige head. Good lacing. Aroma is of peppers, vegetal stuff, roasted malt, coffee, faint bourbon. Taste is of vegetal stuff, roasted malt, coffee, alcohol, very slight bourbon. Palate: Full bodied. Soft-medium carbonation. Overall: Good, but not outstanding.
