UPDATED: FEB 6, 2014 Bottle from Drakes Barrel House. Pours dark brown with a rich tan head and a fruity treacle aroma. There is a carbonated full-bodied dark molasses flavor with with rich malt sweetness and almost no bitterness. 22 oz. bottle from the source. It opens with a fierce pop and pours with a rather vigorous, fizzy light tan head which concerns me a little.. it settles to a nice small ring of tight foam. The aroma is excellent. Woody, nutty with lighter notes of sherry, cocoa and bourbon. It reminds me of the old BA barleywines from Drakes of yesteryear. You know, the ones in the nip bottles with the ship... God I miss those. A little butterscotch and raisin opens up on the nose as it warms. The flavor is surprisingly not as aggressive as the aroma. Sweet plum, dates and raisin with a touch of rum and bourbon alcohol. The nuts, caramel, sherry and cocoa flavors are on the back end and very subtle. It actually feels a tad light in the body for such a big barleywine, but I’m not complaining about that. Virtually no bitterness, except for some faint whispers of herbal hops. They managed to keep the barrel flavors in check and not make a big sweet mess here. Good job. Very tasty stuff.

Thanks to errl for sharing this bottle. Brown pour with a white head. The aroma has some nice oak, maple and vanilla notes. The flavor is similar. I get some heavy toffee notes that are complemented by some maple, vanilla, dark fruit, oak and whiskey. The whiskey really stands out and is very enjoyable. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Apparently there were quite a number of pretty awesome barrels used in this, bourbon and sherry among those. Medium to dark brown in color with an off-white/light-brown head. It has a gorgeous, soft nose and an aroma is of a beautiful, strong mix of sherry and bourbon. It’s much like a barleywine mixed with some imperial stout, partly because of its malt character, but also I think because an imperial stout is usually the style most associated with bourbon barrel conditioning. This is always a great idea... I love me a barrel-aged barleywine! It’s very smooth in the mouth, with a flavor that’s almost like candied fruit with some soft plum and some other sort of red, juicy pit fruit representing. Gorgeous and smooth, alcohol is present in the flavor, but not overwhelming. What a great job! Very classy, very mature, very respectable. From a tap at drakes.The pour has a strong butterscotch aroma with a brownish red appearence.I taste mostly butterscotch, alcohol , and clove.The texture is sticky.
