Black pour with a khaki head. Super smokey nose with some nuts, salt, and bacon. Tons of roasted malt, a bit of sweet chocolate, and some licorice. Tastes quite smokey, but there’s a good chocolate character to it. A light acidity, some dark fruit, a bit of peanut shell, and mild salty bacon notes. On tap at Drakes poured a clear dark reddish brown nearly black with a small lingering brown head. Aromas of smoke, roastiness, bakers cocoa, dark fruit and light licorice. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of smoke, roastiness, bitter chocolate and dark fruit with a smooth lingering smokey finish. Tap at Naja’s. Pours opaque with a huge, creamy, thick brown head with long retention and excellent lacing. Aroma is dark chocolate, smoke, coffee and nutty malt with bacon, earthy hops and prunes. Flavor is heavy malt, moderate smoke and meat with light hops, moderate bitterness, malt derived, with a dry finish. Full body, moderate warmth and carbonation. Sample at GABF 10/11/2012, thanks to Bluemeow76 for assistance with note-taking. This beer pours black with a medium thick tan head and sticky patches of lacing. Aroma of smoked malt and coffee. Growler... Pours dark brown (nearly black) with a small, creamy, lightly-tanned head. Decent retention. The nose is a fantastic whirlpool of smoke, chocolate and caramel, accompanied by a light kiss of vanilla. Medium-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and tickling carbonation. The flavor is smoky and bitter, but also quite thin. Short, watery, burnt, bitter finish. Growler courtesy of the ever-generous ctipping on his birthday!

On tap at Drake’s Barrel House pouring up very dark with mocha head and leaving behind a full sheet of lacing. The aroma offers up chocolate, dark roasted malts, some burnt malts and a faint bacon sense that might only be my imagination conjuring up a bit of smokiness. The taste delivers bold dark roasted malts, sweet malts, some black strap molasses and then flowing into a mix of dark roasted coffee and burnt malts. Into the finish the modest ABV influence causes it to warm a tad and then there might be slivers of smoky bacon noticed from time to time.
