Weissbier is traditionally known for its highly carbonated, refreshing character. Altstadt Weissbier has a very rocky, brightly white head deriving from a high proportion of wheat malt. I believe that the drinker himself should decide whether to enjoy his Weissbier with a slice of lemon or not. The lemon surely accentuates the crisp acidity of the wheat beer as well as visually highlighting the refreshing character of the drink. If you are familiar with the famous Weissbier brewery names like Erdinger, Paulaner, Franziskaner and Schneider to name a few, you will realize that you are in the company of seriously traditional Weissbier! You might think that it is impossible for a South African to brew this Bavarian style wheatbeer – that is until you taste a tall frothy Altstadt Weissbier. Part of the secret is using the original Bavarian wheatbeer yeast strain that not only defies gravity, but also imparts a faint clove and banana flavour to the beer. “Hefe” in the logo means “with yeast” and that the yeast stays in suspension, giving the beer a hazy appearance. Weissbier is a beer worthy of the title Connoisseur Beer for those who are passionate about beer. The first Altstadt of the day should be enjoyed with a breakfast of Weisswurst on a roll.

Draught in Glenfair, Pretoria. Hazy yellow rich lively head. Estery banana aroma. Medium dry with crisp soft mouthfeel. Refreshing and well balanced - the estery yeast character is kept under control by the somewhat bready maltiness. A class act!

(Plastic bottle 100 cl) Hazy golden with a creamy, white head leaving some lacework. Aroma of yeast and cloves. Medium body with a soft carbonation, yeast, banana and clove aromas with plenty of phenols. A sweetish and far from outstanding Hefe. 100508

Cloudy straw a big billowy head.  A little sweaty yeast character, balancing wheaty tartness.  For a non-German wheat it has character and style, if a little unorthodox.

rbsxg, bottle. quite pale yellow with a hint of murk and a lasting head. authentic hefe aroma - vanilla and banana and a bit of shortcake. mellow texture, bready with some light peach and a little dandelion tea tang. well-made, obviously no accident, and very drinkable

Cloudy light hay-colored beer with a white head that recedes to "soap lines." A sour aroma with banana and a citrus/lemon hint in the background. The taste is fairly sweet with very little bitterness. Light bodied, thin texture. Fairly fizzy. Overall, a refreshing light beer.

From memory, this was easily the best of the African beers at the Sydney Xmas ding-dong. A surfeit of crap Australian wheat beers has rather turned me off these styles, but this was a classic German hefe by any measure. Cloudy lemon colour, short head. Typical hefe nose of wheat yeast and bananas. Very refreshing, a little tart, with the usual bananas and cloves. (Bottle, Sydney RateBeer Xmas gathering 2005)

Sully (1380) - Potts Point, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA - DEC 22, 2005
I used to avoid rthese beers in the past but a number of pleasurable experiences have turned me around somewhat. This presents as expected with a hazy light golden body and small ead. The nose is quite a diversion from the numerous hoppy styles had on the night, typical cloviness and big banana esters. The wheatiness of this beer is quite prominent and balances beautifully with the citric and spicy flavours. Thanks Per, gor this and many others.

RBsydneyXMASG ’05 - in a way this was my favourite of the night, even though we had a ton of big fat beers that can obscure the simple pleasures of a good hefe. big banana aroma, creamy, grainy, bready in the mouth, with a delicious touch of acidity in the finish. really well made, authentically bavarian tasting stuff. thanks per!
