(swing top bottle) Hazy, chestnut-brown colour with a beige and tall foamy head. Sweet toast-malty aroma with notes of caramel/toffee, cacao and a tinge of molasses and anise. Sweet and slightly bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a calm carbonation. Toasty malt-character with caramel and present herbal accents; moderately sweet and slightly bitter hoppy finish with notes of caramel in the aftertaste. Decent stuff from Franconia. 29.XII.11 Quack-Duck (9487) - Down South, GERMANY - DEC 1, 2011
bottle from Bierzwerg. Deep, chestnut-brown colour, mid-sized off-white head. Aroma of caramel. Cara-malty base, shy malty sweetness, drier towards the finish. Slightly woody. 3fourths (9351) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - NOV 13, 2015
UPDATED: NOV 20, 2015 Draft at the brewery. Clear chestnut brown body with a tan colored head of little retention. Malt is expressed as tootsie roll / caramel chocolate candy with notes of cola and raisin. Strong diacetyl butter taint in the nose with seemingly no hop expression. Light bodied, lightly sweet with low bitterness. It’s under-carbonated but nicely silky / soft in the mouth, but like the nose there’s little authentic malt expression to be found, something like caramel-chews and chocolate cake frosting.

Bottle. Red chestnut, lively carbonation, big creamy and lacing golden head. Dark sugary entrance, caramel, peppery spicyness, minerally, very light stickyness. Medium body. Easy to drink despite the roasted characteristica. Ernest (7749) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 10, 2013
Head is initially large, frothy/creamy, off-white to light brown, mostly lasting.
Body is clear medium brown.
Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, toasted bread, roasted nuts, milk chocolate), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs), with notes of toffee, scorched honey, orange peel.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter.
Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation.
Oh my god, do my eyes and nose deceive me??? Look at that big, lasting head that leaves actual LACING on the glass! Smell the rich, caramelly, nutty, toffee-and-orange peel aroma (I’m reminded of Abbaye des Rocs, believe it or not)! This is a German lager? Get out! It’s admittedly rather candy-ish and a little unusual, but it’s very expressive and delicious. Very curious to try the Helles now. Idiosynkrasie (7735) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - JAN 4, 2012
