Red-brown, clear. you can see how much carbon is in the brew. Nice yellow head, that lasts. Mild aroma of malt and toffee. Malt, caramel, mild sour with sweet malty, but metallic aftertaste, high in carbon.

Ernest (7602) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 10, 2013
Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy/creamy, off-white to light brown, mostly lasting. Body is clear medium brown. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, toasted bread, roasted nuts, milk chocolate), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs), with notes of toffee, scorched honey, orange peel. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Oh my god, do my eyes and nose deceive me??? Look at that big, lasting head that leaves actual LACING on the glass! Smell the rich, caramelly, nutty, toffee-and-orange peel aroma (I’m reminded of Abbaye des Rocs, believe it or not)! This is a German lager? Get out! It’s admittedly rather candy-ish and a little unusual, but it’s very expressive and delicious. Very curious to try the Helles now.

Bottle @ Landbierparadeis. Rocky head on top of a coppery colored beer. Bready aroma is very malty, with some caramel. the herbal hop overtones are welcome. Great quaffable palate. The flavors are booming breadiness. A good liquid pumpernickel bread crust beer.

caesar (6974) - Bunnik/Utrecht, NETHERLANDS - JUL 18, 2013
Bottled, BB 16 07 13, so 2 days past its date, large sample. Clear copper color, medium off-white head. Aroma of german hops, grassy and spicy, dark caramel, hint of sulphur, slight toast, hint of chocolate. Sweet and bitter taste, loads of caramel and toast, like in a good Dunkel. Quite tasty for a Dunkel actually.

ruggedman (647) - Portland, Maine, USA - JAN 24, 2009
Bottle at Novare Res. Pours a dark clear brown with a small off white head. Aroma is malty with hints of nuts and yeast. Flavor is like many browns, a little toffee, a little butterscotch, and a little coffee even. I’ve realized German Dunkels are very good! Super smooth and easy drinking. Simple enough to have many of.

(bottle) pours a clear amber-ruby colour with a frothy off-white head. very interesting aroma of cherries and oak, with a hint of balsamic vinegar and honey-tinged pale malts, almost like an oud bruin. flavour is the same, very fruity, dark berries and mango, with notes caramel, herbal hops and roasted malts. medium-bodied with average carbonation.
