Lubiere (13796) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 4, 2013
A deep dark reddish brown ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, very good piney and resinous hops, with smooth roasted malt, oily mouthfeel. In mouth, good black IPA with nice intense floral hops, piney, orange pulp, chocolate malt, roasted and smooth. On tap at Espace Public, Nov 2 2012.

2013-05-31. Black body with a nice tan head. 3+ Aroma of lightly musky leafy green hops, light roast. Flavour had a fairly malty base, light roast and leafy green hops. Light bitterness throughout. Average plus bodied palate, modest carbonation. Enjoyable middle of the road take on a black IPA. Bottle at Mondial de la Biere 2013, Montreal

Draft @ Delirium with the brewer. Brune foncée, col léger beige. Arôme malté chocolaté, moyen avec un houblon subtile citronné en retrait. Note de grains restent également présente.

My Bottom Line:
Grape juice, green resins and roasted cereals team up in this bitter, complex Imperial Black IPA.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-There is plenty of foam lacing atop the black gown.
-The aroma is boastful and quite different (for the style).
-The finishing bitterness is also peppery.
-Mouthfeel is very effervescent (Belgian levels) and rather lean. A few more residual sugars wouldn’t hurt in this case. Letting the beer breathe in the glass also helps.
-Coffee notes are also found, hugging the boisterous coniferous bitterness.
-Flavor profile is a tad too brash for any sort of drinkability to be considered.

29/VI/13 - on tap @ Délirium Hoppy Loft (Brussel) - BB: n/a (2013-586) Thanks to John for sharing the beer!

Dark brown to black beer, creamy beige head, unstable, bit adhesive, areas of fine lacing remaining in the glass. Aroma: very grainy, mocha, coffee, cocoa powder. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: lots of roasted flavours, bit sour, mocha, some coffee, little bitter. Aftertaste: very roasted, coffee, cocoa powder, bitter dry ending. A what? A black IPA? Ok then... Would’ve placed this under dry stout.

[5428-20130531] Sample. Orange woody grains aroma. Brown black body with a quick foamy tan head. Bitter boozy wood barleywine flavour. Full body. Tasty but overly boozy. (7/3/7/3/15) 3.5

pours almost brown, or is-it-black-since-the lights-are-fading-or-almost-out-at-studio-p, with a frothy light beige head, good retention and lacing. citrusy and resinous hops with medium dark roastiness in aroma. relatively clean and short citrusy finish. decent roasted malt character - hint of sweetness. average to soft carbonation, medium body. a little more than decent.

(Rating #4639)

Draft: Poured a dark black color ale with a generous foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of piney and citrusy hops with a deep roasted malt profile. Taste is also a great mix between some citrusy and piney hoppy notes with some deep roasted malt notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Nice hops profile and great porter base beer.

Huge Belgianesque tan head covers the very dark cola pour. Very roasty nose with a flavour profile leaning more toward cocoa or dark chocolate than coffee per se. As with many Du Lac brews, it is fairly yeasty and in a brew where malt and hops are already so intense, it feels a bit confusing. Notably, clovey and medicinal phenolic compound add a smoky tang and a kinda plasticy, or rubbery moreso profile that I don’t dig much. Nevertheless, it feels nicely structured, perhaps on the very carbonated side of things, but surely aptly malty and not too agressively bitter, the roast being more to the front than the hops at this stage of aging. Still, intensely roasted hops and such dark malts make for a all-around bitter offering, one in which tobacco leaves and liquorice take a lot of room in the flavour department. Forget the yeastiness and I must say I appreciate its balance. Add the phenols though and I find it a bit all over the place despite its "dark" flavours focus. My thanks to Mr. Clermont for the opportunity.
