4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Ok this iis really the best of the retribution. Everything from the first 4 but but better. Cocolate, vanilla, bitter and sweet bad ass.
Bottle... This beer rocks!… Pours thick and dark brown with a small, creamy, fleeting, khaki head. The aroma is a luxuriant swirl of pouch tobacco, bourbon, chocolate crème, caramel and sticky vanilla beans. Full-bodied with an über velvety mouthfeel and tingly carbonation. The flavor is a cascade of vanilla, chocolate, caramel, tobacco and a perfectly tamed bourbon component. Leans sweet, but not by much. Roasty, lightly bitter, warming finish with a café con leche aftertaste. World class treatment of a very good base beer. A shout out to Jim Wagner at DuClaw! 50belair (3692) - Florida, USA - JUL 21, 2013
Bottle shared by Seth. Huge vanilla nose. Dark brown pour with a kaki head. Big vanilla, coco, wood, and muted bourbon notes. Pleasant mouthfeel with a good body. budznsudz (584) - Audubon, New Jersey, USA - JUN 25, 2013
Pours pitch black with minimal head. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, and roasted malt. Taste follows the nose. Delicious. stumpyiliz (220) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JUN 17, 2013
Bottle courtesy of Sloth. Pours dark black with very little head. Nose is big on the vanilla. Taste is chocolate vanilla. Bourbon comes through in the initial sip and finishes on the palate after the vanilla dies down. Almost too much vanilla. Wish I had six of these to see how they do with age as I imagine the vanilla will subdue and the whiskey will take over. It’s price is a little to high for what it is. Bomber from a BA trade - thanks! Viscous black pour, with a quickly fading head. Nose is scrumptious bourbon, oak, and deep chocolate, with vanilla in there to complement the wood quite nicely. Thick, lustrous mouthfeel is very satisfying and it suits the warming beer well. Takes a good bit to wow me in this style these days, but this one is pretty damn good. What makes it work for me is the fact that the vanilla, choc, and other sweet flavors (touch of coconut milk and caramel) don’t overpower things and don’t come across as artificial. Pretty damn well done. Ret12 (454) - Maryland, USA - APR 13, 2013
This beer was silky smooth with a very full mouth feel. Nice alcohol burn at the end with a sweet finish. Derek881 (1272) - Denver, Colorado, USA - MAR 31, 2013
Poured from a large bottle into a trumpet glass to drink. The beer had a watery, smooth pour with a rich black color with a very slight dark tan head that had short retention, light cling and modest lacing. Its aroma featured a blend of licorice and cocoa, along with notes of raisins, liquor, molasses, and a slight vanilla component; there was an almost medicinal, bourbon character as well. Its taste had an intense vanilla aspect with a sweet-bitter taste, mixed with deep dark fruits, and a slight oak bourbon liquor taste, with mild licorice and an alcoholic finish. Its body was creamy and wet and very watery in nature, though a touch thin with lower levels of carbonation, fizz, and life. Thank you for the fancy beer, Siobhan. charule (2299) - New York, New York, USA - MAR 23, 2013
