Tasted from Growler. Poured a darker and clear mahogany color with a very small sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, citrus, light cherries, and all around hops (very hoppy). Tastes of caramel, some dark fruits, and grapefruit. Light warming alcohol bite in the finish (but not 12+%). MullMan (1099) - Brooklyn, New York, USA - DEC 14, 2005
growler courtesy of egadjzis at Richlikebeer’s YEHA ’05. I’ve been waiting a while to try this one. cloudy golden color - doesn’t really look like a barley wine... foamy tan head. strong hop aroma, flavor is whiskey and hop with a malty backbone in the finish. hmm, a west coast barley wine from Maryland? Interesting. aracauna (3705) - Georgia, USA - JUL 17, 2006
Copper colored body with a good head. Old fruit, cinnamon and brandy make up an enticing aroma, but the beer is thinner than expected. Ungstrup (38902) - Citizen of the universe, DENMARK - NOV 3, 2006
At RBSG 2006 party at RFD. A hazy amber beer with a lazing orange-beige head. The aroma is lovely sweet hop soup. The flavor is a bit like drinking a cold hop soup with lots of alfa acids and lots of fruit, leading to an end with a note of citrus that lingers for a long time and bit by bit turns dry. This beer is so strongly hoppy, that I find it like a sipping beer.

RBSG 07. Sweet aroma. A brown beer with almost no carbonation. Flavor is very sweet and sugary. Only a little fruit flavor. Some alcohol on the palate and in the flavor. Skyview (6115) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - JUL 8, 2007
Supplied by scraff, sampled at the RBSG ’07 Grand Tasting room. Pours a clear light amber brown brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissolves to a fine film. Aroma is very sweet with scents of citrus, tawny port, chocolate and some caramel malt. Taste is full bodied, sweet, and mild bitterness. Palate texture is slick and oily with a slight bitter aftertaste. Finish is smooth and sweet. kp (10880) - Woodstock, Georgia, USA - SEP 1, 2007

UPDATED: DEC 17, 2007 I wanted to like this more than I did. It was just way too hoppy. Even after it warmed it just didn’t have the sweetness and complexity that greatness needs. It is by no means a bad barely wine, it just lacks a fruity complexity to go with the hop bite. In a blind taste test I would mistake this for a double IPA. mwelsh13 (499) - Maryland, USA - DEC 7, 2007
Last of a growler poured into a snifter. No head and little carbonation. Reminded me of a cask pour. Deep brown/black color. Very malty aroma. Sharp hops bite initially. Sweet backbone. Needed to age longer. Best beer yearly beer made by DuClaw. I have another growler of Devil’s Milk that I am going to age until atleast April or May. I have aged this for a year and it just gets better.
