This year, we aged a limited quantity of our award winning (Brewers Association of Maryland Governors Cup gold medal winner in 2006, 2007 and 2008) Barleywine, Devils Milk, in Kentucky White Oak Bourbon barrels to create a uniquely tempting new brew. Hell On Wood is medium/full-bodied and amber in color with a thin, persistent, off-white head. Its mesmerizing citrus flavors and aromas, accented by notes of charred oak, vanilla, and caramelized sugar, give way to a palate dominating hop finish balanced by smoky, bourbon character and a warming alcohol presence (10.6% alcohol by volume). Theres no escape; prepare to fall to the seductive power of Hell On Wood!

Strong Bourbon character on the nose. Appearance is very dark brown with a small tan head with poor retention. Flavor is full of bourbon and oak with notes of chocolate. Roast character is smooth. Mouthfeel is medium with medium carbonation. Overall, it's a well made bourbon barrel stout. Bourbon flavors are high now, but with age they will blend in with the beer. It's a good beer to age. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma of bourbon, oak and caramel. Appearance is a cloudy brown with a medium sized white head. Bourbon flavor is strong. Oak is in support. Malt contains some hints of caramel. Medium fruity esters. Hop bitterness is high which provides some citrus notes. Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium low carbonation. Alcohol warmth is present and strong. Overall, there is too much bourbon flavor and not enough malt complexity. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

[6669-20140816] Bottle. Mild toasted grains and lightly soured aroma. Slightly hazy, amber brown body with a quick foamy white head. Soured grains flavour. Medium body. Good. (7/3/7/3/14) 3.4

Really tasty and drinkable barleywine. Carmel taste up front, then the wood, and a tasty sticky hop finish.

Been a while since really enjoying a bourbon barreled anything. But this one worked. Pour was orangey brown, thin head that dissipated to about nothing, thin ring around the edges, weak lacing. Aroma of bourbon, toasted caramel, citrus, vanilla, oak sawdust. Flavor followed, fruity character and raisins, slight smoke, good bitter hop finish. Mouthfeel moderate for the style, well short of sticky to which was appreciated. Good stuff.

Loved this Thanks PinkZambia for sharing. Terrific bourbon barleywine flavors and a smooth soft palatte. Alittle more bite at the end. Probably even better after 6 months in the basement

Bottle: Light brown with a tan head. Aroma is spectacular - vanilla, alcohol, good Kentucky bourbon. Smooth flavors - almost tastes more like bourbon than beer. A little hoppy presence in the finish.

Bottle to glass. Pours a murky amber light brown color with a light tan head. Aroma is heavy caramel malts, molasses, light bourbon, oak, vanilla. Flavor packs a bit more of the bourbon characteristics, sweet molasses, oak, vanilla. Medium body with a nice warmth to it. Lingering bourbon and vanilla. Definitely one of the better offerings from DuClaw.

Smells like a citrusy barleywine. Looks like a pretty amber. And then you taste it. My god, this stuff isnt good. Smelling like citrus and alcohol? Sounds good. Tasting that way? My god, never again.

Burnt brown appearance, Ithink this is the latest batch. 12oz split 2 ways in stemware @ cellar temp. has a caramel burnt malt nose with a touch of whiskey and oak. very sweet, smoke, oak, sweet brown sugar. some shoe polish and rough bitterness at the finish. Good but not mind blowing.
