This year, we aged a limited quantity of our award winning (Brewers Association of Maryland Governors Cup gold medal winner in 2006, 2007 and 2008) Barleywine, Devils Milk, in Kentucky White Oak Bourbon barrels to create a uniquely tempting new brew. Hell On Wood is medium/full-bodied and amber in color with a thin, persistent, off-white head. Its mesmerizing citrus flavors and aromas, accented by notes of charred oak, vanilla, and caramelized sugar, give way to a palate dominating hop finish balanced by smoky, bourbon character and a warming alcohol presence (10.6% alcohol by volume). Theres no escape; prepare to fall to the seductive power of Hell On Wood!

12 oz bottle shared by b3shine. Pours a clear amber color with a small white head. The aroma and flavor have caramel malts, dark fruit, bourbon, wood, hints of spice, vanilla and some booze. Overall, I like this and would revisit with some age.

Bottle shared by someone at Natifest. Pours a clear caramel/amber color with a small off white film. The aroma and flavor have caramel, bourbon, vanilla, woody, light resiny hops, dark fruits with mild bitterness to the finish. This does show the abv a bit, but the alcohol serves mostly as a warming component.

12oz bottle. Hazy red orange color, mostly clear. Thin off-white head. Dots of lace. Wood, and fuel in the nose. Good vanilla, dark fruit, desert like flavors. Some big earthy hop. Moderate bitter taste, light sweet, more dry. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Finishes more dry. Tasty, complex, but strong-tasting bareywine. I wonder if this would do better with a year on it? Right now, its tasting a little hot and hoppy.

Taster from a bottle shared at Natifest 2013. Mostly clear orange amberc olor. Thin off-white head. Couple loose dots of lace. Moderate bitter taste. Bigger caramel, some chocolate. Very light spice. Good, dark tasting barrel aged barleywine.

Bottle to snifter (shared with the group; thanks sloth). Looks good for the style; a slightly hazy caramel with thin eggshell lacing. Smells solid; semi-sweet and malty with notes of oak. Tastes like it smells with notes of bourbon and vanilla. Solid on the palate; a little boozy though. Enjoyable.

The hints of bourbon from the barrel process dont help mask the high ABV, but add a unique flavor. Its nearly a bourbon Boilermaker in a bottle. Nice aging process for a barleywine.

Bottle. Bottled: 02/14/14. A slightly hazy ruby pour with a thin antique white head. Bourbon, charred oak, plums, vanilla extract, dates, dark cherries, and caramel in the aroma. Goes down medium-bodied, fairly smooth, and just a tad syrupy. Caramel, dates, and plums dominate the initial taste. Vanilla follows. A burnt oaky woodsiness finishes things off. Some citrus and spices here and there. There is a boozy bourbon quality present from beginning to end.

22 oz. bottle. 2012 vintage. There is no mention of Heaven Hill on the label. Pours a clear ruby color with a smallish beige head. Grapefruits, caramel, bourbon, an oaky woodsiness, plums, and vanilla extract feature strongly in the aroma. Goes down medium-bodied and slightly syrupy. Quite sweet upfront in the taste with plenty of caramel and overly ripe plums. Brown sugar. Lots of creamy vanilla and a little shortbread in the middle. Boozy flavors. A charred oaky woodsy presence and a touch of citrus at the end. A good dose of warming alcohol and a cloying sweetness throughout. Nicely done, just WAY too sweet for my taste.

Bottle. Slightly murky copper pour with a short tan head. Aroma is vanilla, toasted coconut, caramel, sweet malt, oak and bourbon notes. Taste is big coconut, toasted malt, oak, vanilla, caramel, sweet malt, candied fruit and bourbon. Body is medium with a soft, bubbly carbonation. Light boozy warmth to this as well. Ends with more oak, vanilla, toasted coconut, toasted malt, boozy notes, caramel, sweet malt notes and bourbon. Nice!
