3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Reviewed 3/2/13. 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a moderately hazy burnished copper color. The head is a two finger offwhite shade. It features a nice creaminess and okay retention.
S: This seems to be very malty - crystal malt, to be precise - with a lot of caramel, marzipan, and toffee. Sadly, the Motueka hops aren’t very present, but they do impart a combination of grassy noble characteristics and grapefruit qualities. Typical of many DuClaw offerings, there’s almost a peppery tone to the yeast used.
T: In a way, it drinks like a typical IPA, but the finish has a peppery zest to it. Before that, an initial wave of malt sweetness and a midtaste of grapefruit and orange help tie things together. It’s really not very bitter at all, just spicy. Subtle expressions of herbs pop up as well. Aside from being just a hair sweet at times, I like the balance of this one, if not the boldness.
M: I find many IPAs that prodigiously use crystal malt have a coarse sharpness to them - and sadly this is no exception. Luckily, it’s clean enough where it doesn’t really linger too harshly. Carbonation and texture thickness are about par for a typical IPA.
O: If you’re not going to make a great IPA, at least make a unique one. It doesn’t quite fit into the former category, but this does enough to be considered the latter. Even if it’s not necessarily worth investing a case of, it’s certainly good enough to try once. Just don’t expect bold grapefruit and pine hoppiness.
12 oz bottle shared with drsordr from notes. Pours a clear amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have pale toasted malts, earthy, floral, grapefruit citrus hops, grass, moderate bitterness, decent. I didn’t get the tropical notes they described. altonbrownd (5897) - Chevy Chase, Maryland, USA - FEB 14, 2016
Bottle from Bethesda Food and Beverage. Copper body with slight head. Nose is hoppy, floral. Taste is also of hops and bitter and citrus too. Quite nice. Good texture. unclemike (3158) - Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA - NOV 26, 2015
Pour clear copper with a finger of white head. The aroma is fairly floral with a little pine in the distance. The taste is nice and bitter with just enough citrus sweetness to balance. Solid but not spectacular. corby112 (2804) - philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 18, 2015
Pours a slightly hazy, dark golden orange color with tangerine edges and a two finger pillowy white head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Very good retention, taking a while to settle and coating the glass with chunks of soapy lacing on the way down.
Earthy aroma with floral, grassy hops, oily resins, tropical fruit and a sweet malt backbone. Hints of fresh cut grass, sticky kind bud and pine needle followed by citrus rind, melon and grapefruit. Stronger malt backbone than I prefer with lots of caramel sweetness, toffee, biscuit and roasted nut.
Medium body with soft carbonation and a slight creamy texture. Some lingering dry, earthy hop bitterness up front but this beer is very sweet with a prominent malt backbone. Some sticky pine, sticky resins and grassy soil countered by citrus and caramel malt sweetness. Some grapefruit, melon and prominent orange zest along with sweet caramel, toffee and biscuit. As it warms, the citrus/tropical fruit notes stand out a bit note with some mango, pineapple and blood orange but the malt presence is a bit stronger than I like for the style. A lot of the interesting hop flavors are sacrificed in the name of balance. Still, this is a solid beer with decent flavor and a well asked ABV making it deceptively drinkable. drsordr (2778) - Loveland, Ohio, USA - SEP 8, 2015

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Appearance is light amber body, white head. Aroma is pungent hop smell, herbal, spicy. Taste is hops and caramel malt. Palate is sweet, medium carbonation. Overall, its kind of just regular. radagast83 (8193) - Arlington, Virginia, USA - JUL 11, 2015
12oz bottle. Poured a translucent orange color with a medium-large white head. Lots of lacing on this one. Aroma was pine, light resin, some earthy hops, light crisp malts. Flavor was tasty, but lacks a little something, a bit too earthy, but would not turn this one down again. PorterPounder (8183) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - JUL 9, 2015
Newport News, Va. - Farm Fresh Market - 12 oz bottle. Pours a sparkling light copper with a sticky eggshell white head - traces of sticky lacing. Fresh, resiny, spruce-like aroma, touch of peachy fruitiness. Malt oriented flavor with plenty of bitter citrusy hop goodness, a touch of nectarine fruitiness. Mouthfeel is crisp, just thick enough. Decent enough. raphael (1282) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUN 30, 2015
first new beer of a mixed six I got at giant eagles (weird PA liquor laws) and man it was good. aroma of hop green, resin & wheat toast. toffee & resin flavors, oily & turgid. mouth not sure what to do, sticky finish. Vaiz (4460) - Den Haag, NETHERLANDS - JUN 13, 2015
Bottle in Baltimore. Hazy orange pour, thin white head. Aroma is quite fruity, some caramel, a hint of rye, grapefruit and somewhat floral. Flavor is very bitter, quite some thick malts and full bodied. Intense IPA, but a little directionless. A bit of everything in there, but no real single selling point. Not bad though.
