Gangstergafje (1105) - Capelle aan den IJssel, NETHERLANDS - JUN 10, 2017
10-06-2017; bottle; at home (bought somewhere in Sweden).
The looks of the beer are nice. The name on the label is dark lager, but this is darker than expected. The beer has a lovely dark ruby red color, so dark it almost seems to be black in the shade. It the light it has a nice reddish amber glow. The beer seems clear, with a slight haze. On top the most beautiful layer of soft, almond coloured foam is formed with superb retention. Not bad.
The smell is quite nice. There is mainly a fresh hoppy aroma, with some fruity citrus tones and a grassy touch. There is a slight maltiness in there, but mainly the refreshing hops. There is a nice tiny roast aroma. Not bad, but a bit mild.
The taste is a lot stronger. It is filled with amazing roasted malts. It almost is like a porter. There is a nice flavour of chocolate, coffee and a nice roasted bitterness. The chocolate flavours give both sweetness and bitterness to the beer. Amazing. The hops are a bit less prominent here. There is a slight bitter hop touch, but not as strong as in the smell.
The palate of the beer is nice. Medium body, very smooth and rather low carbonation. The finish of the beer is not bad, but not the best. There are some bitter hops and a bitter toast touch, but it is a bit out of balance dry. All in all, a nice beer, but the smell should have more malts and the taste more hops. Than it would be even better. jobe977 (62) - SWEDEN - MAY 6, 2017
