Pours a nice deep red brown with a light yet stiff off-white head and a good lacing. Aroma is stong and sweet - toasty malt biscuits. Good nutty sweetness on first impression with a nicely balanced bitterness. Good medium mouthfeel with some alcohol warmth. A lovely drop, having the feel of a slightly stronger brew than it’s 4.2%. Nothing beats fresh beer. Tasted on site at the Founders Brewery and Cafe, this was an improvement from the first time I tasted the ale from a bottle earlier in the year. Pours an amber-red with a light tan head. Musky coffee, strong malt characters and sweet citrus all on the nose. There is quite a lot going on in the flavour too, with the strong malt bitterness being eased by subtle caramel and vanilla notes. There is an almost artificially sweet fruit flavour of apple, and lightly cinamon spiced character toward the end of the mouthful, but this works well with the ales bitterness for a very smooth flavoured beer. Draft at the brewery. Pours a dark amber with an off-white head. Aroma of dark dried fruit, vanilla, brown sugar, cocoa, nuts, and coffee. These all show up in the flavor as well, with a rich roasty character. Sweet and just a little bitter, nice complexity and balance. I liked this one most out of the Founders beers I tried, and I’m not sure if that’s because I have a natural propensity toward brown ales or if it was really the best. UPDATED: JAN 3, 2009 500mL bottle. Pours very dark amber, thin head. Looks almost like a schwarzbier. Hits with a bitter body, no hop flavour, almost no carbonation.
Re- Rated 4/1/09: Draught at the brewery. Pours deep red/brown, off white head. Aromas of apple, chocolate and hops. Tastes bitter initially, fading into some chocolate malt. Quite a robust malt base, coffee flavours are there. Clean slightly astringent finish.

On tap at the brewery. Deep golden brown with a thick cream coloured head. Aroma of chocolate and toffee. Nice flavours of chocolate and nutty nougat, subtle fruitiness that is hard to characterize. UPDATED: JUN 30, 2009 Brown with red highlights and a light foamy head that lasts to the end of the glass. Toast, dark fruit and hints of espresso and chocolate. Taste is milky chocolate, creamy fudge and a smidge of nuttiness. Finishes smooth and rich in the mouth, slightly fruity finish that thins out after a fashion. Bottle, pours a lovely mahogany brown with a think foamy light beige head. A good caramal malt aroma, slightly nutty. A smooth and nutty malt palate. (Bottle 50 cl) Clear, orangey brown with a neat, dense, beige head. Lightly burned malts in the aroma combined with a nutty whiff. Medium-bodied with burned malt accents, a little caramel and a fairly bitter finish. 210208
