Tasted fresh on tap at the Founders Brewery and Cafe. Pours Pitch black with thin light tan head. Coffee, caramel and slight malt on the nose. As expected, coffee flavours dominate this smooth beer, with dark chocolate and caramel sweetness taing the edge off the dark malt characters. Slight hop is present with each mouthful, but the malt clearly contributes most to the almost burnt bitterness. Smooth, balanced, and incredibly full-bodied for a dark lager. Well-deserving of its great reputation.

(Bottle) Bellow average beer. Dark black colour with thick brown-ish head that holds. Unfortunately the apperance does not herald the rest. Both aroma and taste is not very imteresting... Slight rosted malt and chocolate with sweetness in the aroma but I had to really look for it. Taste is on the verge of sourness that dominates the finish. Malt, fruit and very little of chocolate in the palate. Medium bodey, low carbonation. For me this is not amusing schwartzbier.

Very pleasant long black poor. Aroma is very slight mocha and flavour is more the same. Taste was thin. Easily drinkable.

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2016 You can’t really blame this beer for the lack of excitement. It’s a Schwarzbier, for Christ’s sake! But if you think of it, the nice chocolate backbone is quite pleasant and makes it a good one!

A serviceable black lager that does little to excite the palate, which I find to be thin. Colour is nice and dark, but alas you can’t drink the colour.

Dark brown pour. The first thing I noticed was a dominant roasted malt presence. It’s mixed up, although not so well, with chocolate, hops and coffee. I liked this beer, but the balance was off.

500ml bottle. Pours dark midnight black in clolour and boasts a voluptuous tan head. Looks solid in the glass. Smokey malt aroma as you would expect, a little peaty but pretty good. A touch thin in the mouth but it develops a smokey roast malt flavour on the palate.

Light and refreshing with a character greater than the sum of its parts. I’d like to try it on tap to see if the expected coffee and chocolate flavours come out of hiding.

500 ml bottle Aroma: Mild toasted malt and weak chocolate Appearance: Pours lack (about 24 SRM/Lovibond), large head dissipating quickly with minimal lacing. Taste: mildly bitter, hint of sourness Palate: Thin texture, light to medium bodied, soft carbonation, weak finish with a trace of astringency Overall: Not a keeper.

Draft at the brewery. Pours dark brown with a medium tan head. Coffee and roasted malt characterize the aroma, with some quiet notes of chocolate and hops. The flavor is more of the same. Light body. Very straightforward and well-balanced.
