Very dark - rick crema head. Smokey aroma, ash and woody. rich woody flavours up front, a coffee and burnt toast bite on swallowing. Not unpleasant, just different. Touches of chocolate but it’s more the astringent char and coffee bean notes that dominate the palate. (Like biting a choc coated coffee bean) Maybe a touch overcarbonated but a happy quaffer. greig (253) - Hamilton, NEW ZEALAND - AUG 8, 2009
Doesn’t work for me. Thin, fizzy, and a bit burnt. The usual stout flavours are there, but it’s just too thin and overcarbonated. Will try again as I believe it’s a new addition to the range and they may be fine tuning it. Alasdair (76) - NEW ZEALAND - JUL 1, 2009
Typical roast/chocolate aroma, with a stout ’tang’. Smooth and rich initially with milk chocolate flavour. More roast emerges towards the end, but the carbonation dominates a bit too much. Nicely balanced dry cocoa/dark chocolate lavours linger. donfardz64 (538) - Wellington, New Zealand, NEW ZEALAND - JUN 30, 2009
1.25L rigger from Regionals. Pours black with ruby edges. Head is tan and bubbly.
Nose is of chocolate, cocoa and not much else.
Flavour is quite roasted, full of milk chocolate. A fair amount of bitterness mid palate, which lasts all the way through to the finish. Hint of graininess.
With its mouth filling chocolate flavours, this is a full bodied, satisfying stout. Not bad for a first try at a stout.
