Bottle at home. Aroma is coffee, big roasted malt, cocoa, fruity hops, pine resin, dark chocolate, grapefruit, notes of liquorice. Flavour is moderate sweet and medium bitter. Body is full. Very nice, potent bittersweet flavour with a roasty coffee resinous hoppy aroma. Tasty stuff!

Tap at MLF. Very nice smell, classic black ipa, cocoa, roasty, pine, little bit of peppery spiciness. Taste is very nice too. More subtle than the aroma. Light chocolate and roast to start then the finish is hoppy, pine and citrus but with the chocolate still bubbling under. Hides the strength well.

Eructoblaster (4205) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 1, 2013
Bottle - 341ml. Pours an opaque black body with a thin, lasting beige creamy head. Rich, complex malty/hoppy aroma with grainy, cocoa, and coffeish hints. Alcohol is well hidden. Its sharp hoppy taste carries roasty and woody notes. Ends with a robust, long, bitter/roasty finish. Very well done.

On tap at Le Projet, pours a nice black with a medium beige head that leaves great lacing. Aroma is piny and roasted, feeling overall really fresh. Taste is of course bitter but not harsh, medium-high and clean. Flavors are spicy, fresh and almost minty. Roasted malt is kept in check, plays a supporting role. Body was medium, carbonation once again too high. Another great beer by Dunham!

Bottle. Very dark brown - almost black, large and mostly lasting light brown head. Moderate to full malty and lightly sweetish aroma, roasted malt - faint burnt malt with faint - light fruitiness, piney - light grapefruit hoppyness. Body is medium to full, malty and dryish flavor, faint caramel, roasted - faint burnt malt, faint fruitiness, piney hoppyness. Finish is average to long, malty and dryish, roasted malt - light burnt malt, faint chocolate and lots of piney hoppyness - faint grapefruit hoppyness. Well hopped and roasted BIPA - nice head. Bitterness is not harsh.

probstblueribbon (3791) - Nepean, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 24, 2013
341 ml bottle from Broue Ha Ha, served cool in a tulip glass. 20DE12.

App.: Deep brown-black with a nice deep mocha head. Aroma: Chocolate, coffee, dark-roasted malts, leafy, dank hops, slightly ashen, very deep and dark, like a big, stern Impy Stout with extra hops. Palate: Medium+ body, sparse effervescence. Flav.: Big dark chocolate and coffee, plenty of leafy, dank/pine hops, quite dry and stern, big stuff, nice and certainly not for amateurs!; dry with really big bitterness and a long-lasting, dark-roasted malt and dank/pine hops finish.

Black IPA are bewildering and highly variable. Imperial BIPAs are almost twice as bewildering and variable! I enjoyed this as a big, slow sipper.
