UPDATED: OCT 14, 2014 12 oz. bottle, pours black with a large tan head. Aroma brings out burnt roasted malt, some burnt dark fruits and a little toffee. Flavour is along the same lines, with too much burnt roasted malt, toffee, dried dark fruits and ends on lightly burnt notes. Rather carbonated for the style. Not overly complex and not very easy drinking. Rather hash.

Bottle shared by Jay at end of history tasting. Pours black brown head. Nose/taste of cocoa, dark fruit, toasted pumpernickel, toffee and caramel. Medium body.

Bottle - Vintage 2013 - Vinous, plum, chocolate and a nice sweetness. Deep black brown with a big bubbly brown head. Bourbon, chocolate, plum, hoppy bitterness and a rich finish. I don’t know about Barley Wine, but it is rich and tasty.

Lubiere (14262) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 1, 2014
A dark brown barley wine with a thin dark mocha head. In aroma, chocolate malt with light cherry, light vinous character, licorice and soy sauce, and light woody notes. In mouth, a nice sweet chocolate malt with light coffee grind, woody notes, licorice, alcohol warmth, more like a boozy black ipa. Well done. On tap at Brasseurs Du Temps.

Bottle that I took to James’ house for the End of History tasting. Bottle was a touch of a gusher, possibly infected? Pours a deep cola brown with a thin white head. Sweet caramel and roast on the nose, cocoa, some funky notes. Medium bodied, tart warm alcohol, chewy tannins and roast. Falls off on the finish.

My Bottom Line:
Conifer needles, resins and roastiness explode in this rich and powerful Imperial Black IPA.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam tops the darkness.
-Black grapes also appear in the aroma.
-Drinkability is reduced by the sheer intensity of the flavor profile.
-This brew is highly flavorful right now, but it needs time to smoothen a few edges out (for my tastes anyway). The hop flavor needs to be toned down a bit to let the malts take over.

On tap at Winter Warmer Montreal.

on tap at bateau de nuit, qc. unclear dark brown pour with a minimal light beige head showing some retention. perfumey cones, resin, red and black fruits, dried fruits - raisins, dates, but also dark red and blue grapes along with lightly astringent and tannic notes, some roasted and chocolate malts, leather, hint of phenols, few h+ ions. moderate carbonation, light to medium body - oily, slightly harsh grassy-piney finish. maybe not such a good idea - not the black barley wine per say but a mixture of a powerful black ipa that overshadows the barleywine structure. interesting and not bad at all nonetheless.

(Rating #5380)

Bottle. Brown pour with tan head. Sweet malty, spice aroma. Flavors are light malty tones. Very light for a barley wine.

Boutip (6628) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 14, 2014
Bottle: Poured a dark color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and some minimal lacing. Aroma consists of roasted malt with lots of green hoppy notes mix in with some light bourbon notes. Taste is also a weird mix between deep roasted malt notes with some residual sugars with grainy notes and some green hoppy hops notes with a bourbon dominant finish. Body is about average with good carbonation. Complex and unique barleywine but maybe a tad too harsh at the end of the day.
