COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned; has sometimes been available in the cask.
This barley wine is golden in colour with a luscious malty body. A complex blend of hops give an interesting depth and balancing bitterness. The finish lingers with a rich warmth. Something very special. Smooth deep malt blends with bright hop flavours. A hint of pear drops come from higher alcohols.

Full bodies mid amber with fluffy beige head. Malt led, very sweet but not cloying, no sign of the booze, drinks more like a 6%er.

Bottle. Slightly hazy orange. Aroma is alcohol, rye, wet wood. Taste is sour, smokey wood, candy malt. Late, long lasting cakey mouthfeel.

A little thin. Great classic aroma and flavour but thin and lacking extra character and later development.

(Cask, Rainhill Beer Fest): Orange-amber colour with a tiny white head. Aroma of caramel, sweet fruit, malt. Lots of rich sweet malt flavour with caramel and fruit notes popping up but the alcohol isn’t hidden well at all and in my opinion ruins the beer, very pungent.

larsga (7567) - Oslo, NORWAY - AUG 25, 2013
Medium offwhite head. Clear brown body. Sugary caramelly aroma with spicy cocos and raisins notes. Sweet, and faintly dry, cocos and alcohol taste with spicy grape notes. Full-bodied. Mild, slightly hot mouthfeel. Sweet-dry caramelly toffee and alcohol aftertaste with spicy cocos notes. Interesting and drinkable, but could hide the alcohol better. (0.5l bottle, from House of Trembling Madness, York.)

Keg at Birmingham Beer Bash. I am growing to love Barley Wines more and more. This is quite a sweet one, with plenty of sticky malt. Inching towards sickliness, but remains drinkable. It’s big.

Nose: brown sugar, alcohol, slight brandy. Taste malt, bitter hops, syrup, the alcohol is too prominent for a beer that is only 8.4% . Mouthfeel is surprisingly thin, no carbonation, slightly flat. A poor barley wine, with very little depth. I suspect that this bottle maybe bad. It’s odd; I have only ever had 3 beers from this brewery and the other 2 were off. I suspect issues of quality control.

Mmmmm. The year of the barley wine. During which I’ve had about 3. Once every 2 months anyone? Had a necessary sweetness and lots of alcohol.

Cask at the Birmingham Beer Bash 2013. Poured a clear dark amber with a thin white head. The aroma is rich crisp red berry fruit leading to a medium to weak bitter flavour with fruit and weak yeast on the super smooth palate. A very heart warming beer that was not dominated by the alcohol.

Keg at BBB. I like Durham. This was a good barley. Big ABV but well hidden.
